"A laser sounds boring until you hear it work." "Digital audio is awesome!" Learn more about an astonishing new innovation, the Compact Digital Audio Disc Player. Available now from SearsTM for only $589.99.
Ah, for the days of wondrous technology concealed inside large metal boxes.

I like how the aforementioned pizza box has "LASER" in large capital letters on the disc tray. It's highly techmological.

It'll never catch on.

I love the little "light ding!" on the play button. You never see those anymore.

Here's the rest of the 1983 Sears Wishbook catalog.

The leather telephone pictured on this page is pretty sweet.

Interesting that they say "60 minutes" instead of the correct 74 (the length of Beethoven's 9th).

Was the 74 minutes of the 9th a coincidence, or is that the reason we have 74 minute/650MB discs?

Makes you kind of miss 8-tracks.

Ah yes, indestructable compact discs. They will never skip, pop, or get scratched.

It is the reason we have 74 minute disks.
Or, maybe not.

I have a few CDs from around the time they were introduced, and I love the way there's a blurb on the back explaining the technology, "handle as you would a record", "this digital audio Compact Disc provides..."

The length of Beethoven's 9th very much depends on how fast it is played...

P.S. CDs are up to 74 minutes long because that was exactly the length of my commute to university.

squeeee!

jon, I just discovered that my roommate had never even heard of 8-tracks! She's not THAT young- 27, I think.

At the very least this shows she's had insufficient pick-up truck exposure. Our truck had one til the 90s.

Ah yes, 8-tracks. I had a bunch of them right up to college in Rochester. They didn't handle the Rochester winters very well. But by then I was way more into my CB radio to care.

Indeed.

I still have an old 8-track player, with record feature on it, no less. The record quality is better than cassettes cuz the tape is thicker.
Did/does anyone have a CD player from back in the day that had a loop feature on it? They no longer have the feature, but hours of fun if you have it.
