I had never heard of Mr. Blobby until this morning. He's a horrifying clown-blob that was on some sort of British sketch comedy show. [Google Video link; horrifying]
This is from Noel's House Party which was a bizarre mix of pranks, games and covering people in muck. Think of it as a mix of Candid Camera, sketch show and game show. Anyway, for a few years it was insanely popular. So popular in fact that the presenter you see there, Noel Edmonds, was actually able to open funparks based on the show.
Mr Blobby started out as a piss-take of the sort of hideous characters you get on childrens TV but turned out to be so popular with the kids that he often turned up on children's TV unironically. He also had a number one single over here - and it was as awful as you'd imagine.
Apparently they'd hire ex-army guys to wear the Blobby suit because it called on the wearer to be very fit, able to put up with the intense heat of the costume and to be able to take all sorts of knocks and bruises. It's quite weird to think that there's a total hard case in that big pink blancmange.
Anyway, the House Party show gradually fell out of favour with the public for various reasons and it looked like Noel's TV career was pretty much finished.
So, it's funny that you post this now because just a few months ago Noel Edmonds made a comeback with the show Deal Or No Deal which has proven to be very popular. All credit to the guy because that's a format that just doesn't work unless you have a very strong presenter.
House Party was the biggest load of shite ever shown on TV. And Mr Blobby actually had a single that reached number one in the charts. The BBC should hang its head in shame.
Mr. Blobby was so popular he addressed parliament and was the honorary commissioner of football and all sorts of thing like that.
The clip shown here is really a stretch in terms of acting for Mr. Blobby. Usually he just said "blobby, blobby, blobby" and knocked everything over accidentally.
Oh man, that's fantastic. It would definitely be a lot less funny if he didn't fall down and bump into things all willy nilly. That big pink spotted tubby guy bumbling around is sort of funny to me. And when he flails his arms in frustration? Hah.
Mr Blobby was so popular in my last year of high school that 18-year-old girls were wandering around bumping into each other and yelling "Blobby Blobby Blobby!" in the rec room, and thinking it was hilarious.

Yeah it's cheap and stupid, but if people laugh, who cares? It's just a bit of harmless fun. What people find funny, they find funny.
Telling people that they shouldn't laugh at Mr Blobby troubles me. Because then they'd cease to be an individual, rather, a slave to someone else's tastes and thoughts. (By some famous person, I can't remember who. Paine?).
O_o I remember dancing to the Blobby song at my school's Christmas party. I found the character hilarious. But I was six years old at the time, so I think my lapse in taste can be forgiven.
