Why no spam and self-links here? →[More:]I realize this site has only a fraction of the traffic that Metafilter gets, but is that the only reason? And the email address in my profile is in standard format (like most user's profiles), but I've received no spam.

The thing about communities is that 'crappiness' is not a linear metric.

Like you have a community of 2000 people, and one of 200 people. The smaller community isn't going to be 1/10th as crappy as the larger one. It might be exactly as crappy, or not crappy at all.

Basically, it only takes one turd to ruin the pool. Then you have to start implementing all kinds of rules and restrictions and unspoken codes and crap.

Keep it small and communal and you keep it fun

Plus, self-links aren't against the rules here. People post their own projects all the time, but it's not some big taboo, so nobody makes a stink.

You know, when people over at that other place make fun of MeCha, they usually mention the pictures of cute animals as a big turn-off. I personally am not that into pictures of cute animals, but if they work like scarecrows for assholes, I'm all for keeping 'em.

I guess I don't really count a self-link by an established member of the site. Metafilter gets self-links by people who sign up just to promote their (commercial) website - I'm sure that would raise a stink here too.

Shit, I've even visited cuteoverload.com on my own volition because of MeCha's influence.

personally, i always fill out my email normally and I never get any spam or if I do, it goes to my spam folder and I never see it.
