18 April 2006

Continued from the thread with 156 comments: What movies have you enjoyed recently?
Sideways

Heart of Gold, the Neil Young movie by Jonathan Demme. That was truly amazing.

One I didn't enjoy but expected to: Masked and Anonymous. A great cast, an admirably quirky idea, incredible set design...it just plain didn't work. Bad script, I guess.

Thank You For Smoking was enjoyable.

Oh good. I want to see that.

Did anyone like Inside Man? Denzel Washington has turned into Mr. Hollywood Cheesy, but a friend told me Inside Man was good.

Denzel Washington is the only real movie star we have left. Well, maybe Clooney, too.

I saw Paths of Glory (Kubrick, 1957) on the big screen this weekend - so good. I also saw Thank You For Smoking but I was uncharacteristically drunk at the time and so barely remember it. I really wanted to see it, too; I'll have to rent it.

I really liked Junebug.

So, as long as we're on the subject, I'm off work today, and I think I may go to see a movie. But I need recommendations.

Between the offerings at this place and this place, what should I go see? Likely candidates: Heart of Gold, Thank You For Smoking, CSA, Inside Man, V for Vendetta.

I saw Thank You for Smoking too, that one was very entertaining. I loved Rob Lowe's character and the scene at his office.

I finally watched Capote. It was OK. I love Phillip Seymour Hoffman, but it annoys me when actors get major awards for impersonations rather than actually acting.
posted by gaspode 18 April | 10:49
You know, Jim Thompson wrote the screenplay for Paths of Glory.

My favorite film from less recently than this weekend, though, is Factotum. It's based on the Bukowski book.

Hey guys, that 156 comment thread just got subverted. Can we try again here?

A hundred fifty-six comments about film, maybe?

Anyone see that Murrow flick? It was purty good.

Inside Man was very satisfying. Many roles that seemed to be acted with quiet relish.

box -- I'm gonna harp on Heart of Gold some more. It's a concert movie, yes, but it's more than a concert movie. It shows a tremendous respect for the musicians and their longtime relationships. You really get a nuanced sense of a group of people who care about each other working together on something meaningful. The songs are touching. It's a great portrait of a sincere and accomplished artist presenting honest material crafted around themes of maturity, love of life, the challenges of ageing, and the long view over the past.

The stage costumes are really cool, too.

Gribblesniff might look like this sketch, but with a comb-over, if he were human:

Oh, but Gribblesniff is no mere human. Nonono.

Huh, sounds like something I must see. Thanks for the insider tip! *wink wink*

I just returned King of Marvin Gardens to Netflix. And Five Easy Pieces was on one of the movie channels last weekend.

Then I see on IMDB that Bob Rafelson had a run of soft-core porn movies, and he also directed the video for Lionel Ritchie's "All Night Long."

But what happened to Jack Nicholson? His career was pretty much over after 1975. One long, drunken fart.

I saw C.R.A.Z.Y. the other day. It's Québecois French, and quite entertaining. One of those coming-of-age movies, complete with Catholicism, gender/sexuality issues, and teenagers in the 70s.

Last week, I saw Lila Dit Ça, which was awfully sexy.

I watched A History of Violence, Walk the Line and Brokeback Mountain this weekend - I really liked all three.

I liked A History of Violence on DVD, and V for Vendetta and Inside Man at the movies.

Most recently, I watched Elizabethtown on DVD. It had some really funny moments ("Freebird!") but was meh overall.

Breaks 24 comment barrier.

Recently,
I liked Kingdom of heaven and Cold mountain.
They Live was quite fun in an "OMG, that's awful" kind of way.

I loved Sideways. I also liked Broken Flowers (I adore Bill Murray). I saw In Her Shoes with a girlfriend and we had a great laugh, it's a good chick flick.

I watched Ocean's Twelve on TV last night and couldn't follow a fricking thing that was happening. But who cares with George 'n' Brad in it?

Also viewed recently:

V for Vendetta (thumbs up)
Kingdom of Heaven (thumbs up)
Sideways (thumbs up) but I'm not sure why it was such a "big thing".

I luuuurrrrve Ocean's 11 & 12. Heist films rock.

I saw Sideways over the weekend, we really enjoyed it. Really funny at points, and I can see why it was a big thing -- nothing else quite like it, especially the male friendship aspect. I also found out that Thomas Haden Church may be part Hispanic, which you can really see in this movie vs. Wings where he had bleached hair.

There were a few obvious storytelling clichés and Virginia Madsen was an inch too beautiful for the role but much else was spot on.
