Continued from the thread with 156 comments: What movies have you enjoyed recently?
Heart of Gold, the Neil Young movie by Jonathan Demme. That was truly amazing.
One I didn't enjoy but expected to: Masked and Anonymous. A great cast, an admirably quirky idea, incredible set design...it just plain didn't work. Bad script, I guess.
I saw Paths of Glory (Kubrick, 1957) on the big screen this weekend - so good. I also saw Thank You For Smoking but I was uncharacteristically drunk at the time and so barely remember it. I really wanted to see it, too; I'll have to rent it.
So, as long as we're on the subject, I'm off work today, and I think I may go to see a movie. But I need recommendations.
Between the offerings at this place and this place, what should I go see? Likely candidates: Heart of Gold, Thank You For Smoking, CSA, Inside Man, V for Vendetta.
I finally watched Capote. It was OK. I love Phillip Seymour Hoffman, but it annoys me when actors get major awards for impersonations rather than actually acting.
box -- I'm gonna harp on Heart of Gold some more. It's a concert movie, yes, but it's more than a concert movie. It shows a tremendous respect for the musicians and their longtime relationships. You really get a nuanced sense of a group of people who care about each other working together on something meaningful. The songs are touching. It's a great portrait of a sincere and accomplished artist presenting honest material crafted around themes of maturity, love of life, the challenges of ageing, and the long view over the past.
I saw C.R.A.Z.Y. the other day. It's Québecois French, and quite entertaining. One of those coming-of-age movies, complete with Catholicism, gender/sexuality issues, and teenagers in the 70s.
Last week, I saw Lila Dit Ça, which was awfully sexy.
I loved Sideways. I also liked Broken Flowers (I adore Bill Murray). I saw In Her Shoes with a girlfriend and we had a great laugh, it's a good chick flick.
I watched Ocean's Twelve on TV last night and couldn't follow a fricking thing that was happening. But who cares with George 'n' Brad in it?
I saw Sideways over the weekend, we really enjoyed it. Really funny at points, and I can see why it was a big thing -- nothing else quite like it, especially the male friendship aspect. I also found out that Thomas Haden Church may be part Hispanic, which you can really see in this movie vs. Wings where he had bleached hair.
There were a few obvious storytelling clichés and Virginia Madsen was an inch too beautiful for the role but much else was spot on.
