So.... large-breasted females cause aggressive male courtship behavior?

The poor hens sounded traumatized, though.

And let's not even begin to talk about ducks....

But you know, this article has me puzzled. I'd never read a thorough description of chicken courtship rituals before. And now I'm wondering, what is it I'm doing that makes my hen squat when she sees me? I don't waltz, and I only coo sometimes. I'm hoping it's her and not me.

There's "tid-bitting," where the rooster pecks at the ground like he's eating and lets out a series of food calls to catch the hen's eye.

Then there's "cornering" where the rooster finds a corner in the pen and starts kicking up shavings to draw the hens over.

The routine culminates in what's called "waltzing," where the rooster circles around the hen with his outside wing extended, running the spurs on the back of his feet through it to make a rasping sound.

Heaven knows, that gets me every time.

Would "waltzing" matildaben jokes be out of place here?

Probably being a million times bigger than her.

There's a good description of this phenomenon in Temple Grandin's book "Animals in Translation," where she also concludes that the genes for fixed-action pattern behavior are linked to something coding for size. It's an interesting test case for nature vs. nurture in determining these courtship dances.

"They were jumping right into mating without doing all the stuff to make the hens interested in them."

What's wrong with that?
