Double post! Thanks to this Mefi post, I finally listened to Miko's album "Both Ends of the Gun" and I love it! So two questions inside[More:]

1) Miko, can I buy this album anywhere? or at least get mp3's?

2) I've been craving some good old-timey folkish-country music recently; the kind my papa used to play. Any suggestions, bunnies?
how old-timey do you want it?

meh, I'm pretty open. New stuff is fine, too. I just like the word, and in my mind "old timey" is a particular sound.

oh right, like the way they use "old-timey" in Oh Brother! Where Art Thou?. I'm with ya.

Are any of you boys smithies? Or otherwise versed in the metallurgical arts?

She R-U-N-N O-F-T.

Imagine my surprise to come back and check MeCha/MeFi and see all this activity. What fun. The exposure is definitely thanks to Eideteker, who nudged me into posting to Projects, and Matildaben, who noticed it and encouraged everyone to vote early and often. Thanks, bunnies! Muddgirl, glad you like the CD, and if you email me (in profile) I'd be happy to send you a home-burned disc.

First, a good answer to the question, "What is old-time music?"

As to things to listen to: there's so much. Some ofmy favorites:

Old Crow Medicine Show
The Hunger Mountain Boys
The Lonesome Sisters
The Carter Family (they're classics)
MeCha'er Triode clued me into the excellent Flat Mountain Girls
Gillian Welch (of course; she helped spark this revival)
You'll love the Everybodyfields (play their track "The Red Rose").
You might enjoy the Mammals.

These are all the new-generation folks (except the Carters). When people start really getting into old-time, they listen to field recordings quite a bit, and then the work of the previous generation of old-time revivalists, people who were working in the 70s. It's great stuff.

OCMS is great new stuff.

I often think of that Smithsonian Anthology of American Folk Music when people bring this topic up, but to be honest I think I get more milage out of this Roots 'n' Blues collection, even though the AAFM is quite fine.

Also, OCMS covered Leadbelly's song CC Rider. I recommend this best of CD.
