One (daydream) nation, indivisible... Sonic Youth's masterpiece is now part of the U.S. Library of Congress. Frickin' cool.
Awesome!

I thought, like, everything is a part of the Library of Congress.

Not audio recordings, apparently, SC.. that's a project they've just launched in the last six years.

Daydream Nation is one of a handful of albums that I wish I could hear for the first time all over again.

Here's the complete National Recording Registry list.

What's your favorite? I'm torn between Brilliant Corners, Mingus Ah-Um and The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan.

all this highlights is really how completely weird the library of congress is about music.

like most music libraries, honestly. there is a mentality that says, "keep it or buy it, if..."
- it's western classical
- it's academic modern (outgrowth of western classical)
- it's ethnographic in some way (including "folksong")

and that's usually been it. if it was pop, it would be ignored for twenty years until someone decided, "hey wow this is historically important".

and if no one did, well then...

this is part of the best collections of commercially available music are not at libraries (unlike commercially available books), but rather in the hands of radio stations, record labels, private collectors, or even just large stores like Amoeba.
