AskMecha: How can one best jump into web development? In college I took a horrible course in C programming and it put me off computers. Now, looking around at all this great stuff happening on the web, I wish I had stuck with it. What do I need to do to develop a useful web development toolkits? I want to learn how to build sites like Upcoming, or interesting applications like Basecamp. Assume I'm starting from scratch. Is this something I can learn on my own from books? Are there online classes you recommend? Please hope me!
Ack, that had a lot of [more] that was supposed to go inside. Sorry.

Have you searched AskMetafilter? This question has been asked over there at least once in the past.

Feet first, hand holding the nose closed.

But seriously, askme is full of advice on this topic. I think I've even given some there. I'm not entirely self-taught, but it wasn't my "major" either. For the record, people consider me more of a web designer where I'm at but I do a fair bit of what others would call web development and project management for that title.

My advice would be for you to try to land a job somewhere where you can learn from others and grow into what you want to do in the industry. Good Luck.
