What do German speakers say to mean "of course"? Babelfish would have me believe it's "selbstverständlich", but I'm skeptical.
My brother lived in Hamburg for a bit, and he told me that in the local dialect natürlich is pronounced almost exactly like English naturally. There were other uncanny similarities too. All of which probably illustrates something very interesting about Low German and English.
"Self-evident" is the way I'd translate "selbstverständlich." But yeah, my German teachers would generally say "Ja, natürlich" when one might say "Yeah, of course" auf Englisch.
I thought "doch" was used to respond positively to questions like "hast du mich nicht gesehen?" to which "ja" would be potentially confusing (yes, you didn't see me, or yes, you did?).
