The Master Musicians of Jajouka [More:]I saw these guys play during the fall of '99 and have to say it was one of the best shows ever and had more crowd response than any other concert I've seen as well as a more diverse crowd. Here Bachir Attar talks about the band that William Burroughs called a 'special caste' and the music you have to be born into the family to play.
The way it starts and the way the music is built layer over layer reminds me of some of the things King Sunny Ade has done. Thanks rebirtha.

I've always been a fan of the Master Musicians since I discovered them through Brion Gysin. A friend of mine bought the CD 'One Night @ the 1001' (more info), a recording of an evening of the Musicians playing at the 1001 Nights, (Gysin's club in Morocco). Also on this is Gysin reading 'Dilaloo'. Here's a link to the .zip file of the album in .mp3 format (at 192k). File size is 161 meg. Enjoy!

Yeah, these guys are fantastic. I saw them around that same time I believe.

And thanks Zack, I'm downloading now.

Whooo Hooo! I saw MMofJ in Seattle when they came through here and I agree, it was one of the most amazing concerts I've seen. Everyone was just totally entranced. My date and I sat across from the lead singer of Black Cat Orchestra and had a great conversation about international music. I used to live in Morocco as a child and the concert really brought back a lot of memories. . . Of course, I had the album before I went and still have it today. 'Apocolypse Across the Sky'. There's also some great gnawa music on 'Sheltering Sky' with John Malkovich and Debra Winger.
