07 April 2006

So... I took the day off to spend with the mewly reconciled, rebuilt, chopped and channeled Pips. Asleep in bed, I got a call from Trishalynn saying "calling me if you wanna talk?" A bit baffled I kept sleeping. Later checking my email, trish informed me, that I (along with joe famous, my cubie kevin and her roommate jim) have BEEN LAID OFF! I should be upset but I'm not really. That job had turned two of my passions (music and computers) into something tedious. We'll be working till 6/30, then we get severance and since it's a layoff we can file for unemployment. Life is a cabaret. Who wants to get drunk?
Oh shit, jon, that totally fucking sucks! What's the job market like in NYC? I hope it's better than the P-town. Sounds like you'll be ok between the severance and unemployment, but that's never fun. Best of luck, and I'll have a drink for you.

On the minus side I will have to travel farther to drink but on the plus side it didn't seem like you were really feeling it. You knew that shit was in the mail.

Fuck 'em.

Let me know if there's anything you need your head photoshoped onto. I'm here to help!

I'm sorry/congratulations! (I'm not quite sure what the proper response is.)

I talked to my immediate supervisor, Pete, and he was cool and apologetic about and said he was gonna go get drunk. Seriously, Wino, wanna grab a few?
posted by jonmc 07 April | 11:23
Awww, sorry honey :-(

Are you in Queens or Manhattan?
posted by Divine_Wino 07 April | 11:24
Layoffs suck! Jon, I'm sorry to hear it. : ( *hugs*

second jrossi. Hopefully you can find a job that doesn't suck your soul pretty soon.

time to set up camp in the beer garden?

Wish I could be there to help you drink it out, but I'm in Jersey getting my head together. Yeah, I was one of the ones who was spared the proverbial axe, but things still suck for me because my roommate (and ex-boyfriend) is one of the ones who got hit.

Kevin, too? Criminey.

Me and the wino's heads onto Bruce and Clarences bodies on the Born To Run cover would be cool.

Wino, we're in Queens but we could be in Manhattan by 5, no problem.

(Also, trishalynn managed to not get laid off)

If my friend needs me to get drunk in the middle of the day instead of working, then I'll do that, 'cause that's the kind of mick I am.

Jon lad, I think I can totally make it out for at least a few, probably not a hurley though.

posted by Divine_Wino 07 April | 11:34
*wince* Best of luck in turning things around, man. Here's to coming back bigger and better than ever before.
posted by Zozo 07 April | 11:35
It's gonna be total short-timer syndrome in there for the next 2 months. I know you said you wanted to be a bum for a while, and between the severance and the unemployment, you should be able to handle it. But it still sucks.

And take good care of Pips!
posted by matildaben 07 April | 11:37
sorry/congrats here as well...
posted by Hellbient 07 April | 11:37
Sorry for the whacking jon, but hopefully this will lead to better things.
posted by mike9322 07 April | 11:37
Ah, hell, that sucks, bro. Anything I can do to help, I will.

Chances are good that I'll make it for a drink. You'll be at the regular joint, around sixish?

If not, call me.
posted by Hugh Janus 07 April | 11:41
Yeah, times of change. . .you'll come out better on the other side. Hang tough.

Wino, we'd love to have ya. The mister's sippin java over my shoulder... Come on out to XXXX Ditmars Blvd. (Ditmars and 27th St.) and ring the top bell. We're above the dentist/massage/transmission repair shop. We'll go over to the infamous sports bar, the Remote (where you can smoke).

Anyone else who'd like to join us is more than welcome as well. Send an email...

Thanks also to Trish for letting us know. Much appreciated heads up.

At least you have some time to find something, it's not that you've been told the job is done as from today. But still it sucks.
posted by essexjan 07 April | 11:45
Hugh, we'll be drinkin' in our home borough looks like. Feel free to roll on up to Ditmars & 27th (top buzzer) after work and we'll wait for the Wino and snarf a few at my local.
posted by jonmc 07 April | 11:51
Sorry, jon. I hope this is a major case of silver-linings, which I suspect it will be.

Sry/Cngrts, jon. And give 'em hell, man. Your next move will be towards a better place.
posted by mcgraw 07 April | 11:57
Oh man, that's a bummer. At least you get some notice and can collect unemployment...

*smooch*

I say this is cause for celebration. Release with benefits? And a renewed happiness with Pips? Rock on, brother Jon, rock on!

You might not want to post your home address on a public website.
posted by matildaben 07 April | 12:10
Good point, tilda. I think wino and hugh have noted it by now, maybe the admins can **** the address out?
posted by jonmc 07 April | 12:12
also, wino, I emailed you my phone #. call me with your plans. You already have it hugh. If you get tthe machine just start talking and we'll pick up.

Nah dude, I can't make it to queens. I'm really sorry. I got to be home at or around 8. I can make it out to Antartica or we can try for next week.
posted by Divine_Wino 07 April | 12:19
I don't know how I mixed up that message, now I feel like a dick. Why didn't you tell me you were gonna get surprise laid off?
posted by Divine_Wino 07 April | 12:21
We'll meet you at Antarctica at 5pm then. Hugh, be there or be rhombus. Anyone else who wants, too.
posted by jonmc 07 April | 12:21
Bet. I'm buying.

Happy for you and Pips, though.

Hey, this could be one of the best things that has ever happened to you. In between drinking, start thinking about the bold move you're dying to make. You know, the things you really want to do. Now's the time to work your angle. Good luck!
posted by Miko 07 April | 12:34
Damn man, sorry to hear that. But it sounds like, for you, you'll be better off in the end. I won't be going anywhere tonight, but I'll raise a glass to you from home.

When I called my supervisor in a panic, she told me that the company's going to let people use the facilities to send out resumes by email and fax. That's a good thing, at least.

On my end, though, this now means that three people are going to be doing the work of six.

12 weeks notice?!?
I was laid off twice in my working life and I didn't get 12 minutes... (I did have warning that it was coming)

Still, it was kinda fun to go home in the middle of the day, wave my (fairly substantial) severence check at my then-wife and say "Look how much they paid to get rid of me!"

Enjoy the Short-Timer experience, jon; I think most of the condolences need to go out to Trish.
posted by wendell 07 April | 14:09
Fuck 'em, indeed. But as mentioned above, the way they've done it leaves you plenty of room to figure out what you really want to do, and maybe how to get there. Plus the lovely Pips has got your back!

I'll hoist a glass to you, TrishaLynn (who I do feel for indeed), and Joe Famous--as soon as I get to my local bar. With you in spirit if not in spirits until then.

Nonalcoholic scuppernong wine will be lifted in your honor tonite, my friend.

You'll find something better.

12 weeks notice? That is unheard of in my experience. Make the most of it.

Remember, as one door closes, another one slams in your face. Or something.
