I read this last night, and the only word that sprang to mind was "dumbass."

Poor man. What a dummy.

Too bad the round wasn't one. A dummy, that is.

When I was a kid I was at the swimming pool and there was a bee by the side of the pool so I smacked it and killed it but I left the bee body there by the side of the pool and a half hour later I went to climb onto the diving board and I stepped on the dead bee and the dead bee stung me in the foot and I was surprised and angry because karma is a bitch.

Just 'cause it's dead doesn't mean it ain't dangerous, folks.

Humphrey Bogart plays Harry Morgan, owner-operator of charter boat in wartime Martinique. Morgan's right-hand man is Eddie (Walter Brennan), a garrulous alky whose pet question to anyone and everyone is "Ever get stung by a dead bee?"

I saw this story last night, but I didn't read closely enough to realize it was ammunition, not a sea-shell. Makes much more sense now.
