You never truly miss something till it's gone. Case in point: iodine.[More:]
I'm having my semiannual (though I'm actually a year overdue!) full body scan later in the month to make sure my thyroid cancer is still in remission. In order to maximize the effectiveness of the "tracer" amount of radioactive iodine they'll dose me with before doing the scan, I have to minimize iodine as much as possible from my diet for the next 2.5 weeks. So...no iodized salt, no dairy, no seafood, almost no packaged/prepared foods, almost no restaurant food, and NO CHOCOLATE. Guh. My boyfriend's all "honey, aren't you worried about the cancer and stuff?" and I'm all, "Dude, it's nearly Easter and I CAN'T EAT CADBURY'S EGGS. Cancer is the least of my worries."
Oh, and also: I'm on a crazy deadline at work -- I was at the office till 9 on Friday and gotta go in a for a few hours today -- and have to bake my own damn bread from scratch for the next 2 weeks. It is lucky I can still drink.

aah scody, I too have the creme egg addiction. Take all the money you save from not buying creme eggs every time you pass them and buy eight million of them, marked down, after your scan!

Hang in there, scody. I'd probably either go homicidal or spontaneously implode by then end of the first week.

I have never had one of those Cadbury egg thingies. I used to get them in my Easter basket every year but they looked gross to me and I gave them to mom.

Wow - I thought they had to put I in salt because it's so rare. I guess the salt is in everything, though, huh? Nutritional labels can be so inadequate.

Too bad you're not local or I'd donate my not-oft-used bread machine for the occasion.

Hey, best o'luck with the screen. And I hope you are planning a big ol' binge blowout for when it ends!

Iodine for you.

I'm sure that you have all of our best hopes and wishes.

I don't miss iodized salt since I've switched over to fleur de sel (yeah, it's more expensive but I'm running it under the paradigm that it's cheaper for me to brew my own Blue Mountain than to buy a crappy cup of regular coffee from Starbucks ~ it's cheaper to use high quality & tasty salt than to eat out/fast food).

And, hey, if you're still in remission, you might want to give your immune system a pat on the back just in case they were on the ball and lent a hand. =)

Best wishes, scody.

I'm sending healing thoughts! Also, Andreina at Pets, Naturally on Ventura does reiki. Call ahead first, though--I'm not sure which days she works there. Does bread from TJ's or Whole Foods fall under what you can't have?

no chocolate? Man that's tough.
Take care scody.

hey all -- thanks for the good wishes. yeah, it's weird how ubiquitous iodine apparently is now, given that it was once such a difficult nutrient to get. The problem with pretty much all baked/packaged/prepared foods is that there's no way to tell which are made with iodized salt and which are made with non-iodized salt, and iodine levels aren't required on nutrition labels... so things that may in fact be safe are essentially hidden from me, so to speak. Also, lots of foods are prepared in vats, etc. that are cleaned with iodine -- that's a big way that it gets into dairy, apparently. Strange.

ANYhoo, thanks for the healing vibes and good thoughts! I'm feeling really positive that the scan will come back clean, at which point I'll have been in remission for close to ten years -- which I think puts me officially in the "cured" column! So that'll be cool.

I'm already planning my binge dinner -- sushi, then chocolate. In the meantime, I've learned how to make almond milk from scratch. How often do you get the chance to do that?

This evening I had an utterly anti-scody meal. If I'd known, I'd have changed the menu, at least slightly, in sympathy.

Hang in, you.
