AskMeCha: Mac audio problems.[More:]
I'm posting this for a friend, who isn't local, so I can't look at the iMac in question myself. I'm professional level with PCs, but merely competent on Macs, anyway:
I posted a link to a funny [song] that I found, plus a video... And the fucking audio for YouTube or RealPlayer vids got broken...

I mean, I have audio thru iTunes just fine, and I can play Quicktime vids on [websites] and get audio just fine, and I have some vids downloaded, but now NO audio from YouTube or audio from RealPlayer vids work...

And I KNOW it worked, before, I've watched YouTube vids on my mac with sound...

Any ideas? ugh... I've tried in both Safari and Firefox...

I would normally suggest reinstalling Flash (which YouTube uses) or RealPlayer, but both of them NOT working and iTunes working means that it's probably the audio device they're both using. There couldn't be some hidden volume/mute setting (RealPlayer handles PC audio weirdly, controlling the system Wave volume instead of the global volume)?

It seems like it should be simple, I'd like to save her a trip to the Apple Store.
Does she have Detour installed? If yes, check the System Preferences -> Detour settings.

Create a new user account, log into it, and try to reproduce the problem.
