I'm back! Miss me?→[More:]The applied creativity conference was awesome. I looked at my watch twice in 5 days. I have a new career, and a cold. But I'm damn excited! How is everybody???
The conference was an applied creativity conference. It was about learning a patented system called Simplex, which is a problem solving process developed by a Canadian fellow named Min Basadur. Their site is here. This particular conference covered the first 2 of 3 steps in learning the process. Several of us intend to complete the 3rd step in Toronto in July, myself included.
There were about 15 people there, and it was held at Ball State University (waves at SisterHavana) all this past week. A large portion of the group was BSU contingent, the remaining folks a motly mix from NC, VA, South Africa, and Australia.
I found the applied creativity folks online back in December when I was looking for a conference on creativity. They were actually one of the main exhibitors at another conference, and I clicked through to their site b/c I thought they looked really interesting. As soon as I saw it and poked through their whole site, I knew this was the one to go to, even though I'd have to borrow the $ to go. I looked at it as an investment in myself, took the $ out of my business line of credit, and went.
You guys, I am SO DAMN GLAD I went! It was THE best conference I ever went to: engaging, dynamic, immersive, intense and growth inducing. I looked at my watch TWICE during the whole 5 day conference.
I came away with some concrete skills, and ideas for picking up several new clients, many some existing clients for something totally different I'm doing now, and some new ones. I already scheduled a problem solving session with our HOA!!! I'm also going to do one with Mrs Chewie to get some practice and to help her get to a better place with her job.
I've been working with some other folks, limping along with a similar process, but not really getting anywhere, and feeling intimidated b/c the rules keep changing. Not any more!
Remember way back when I said I needed a new career but didn't know what? A bunch of you guys answered in that thread, and amberglow's answer kept tickling the back of my brain - he said "what about something do-gooder-ish?". I think he meant like a non profit type thing. I've been working for years with a non profit, helping out with web stuff and computer tools, but ovbiously I can't work for free for the rest of my life. The weird thing is, this option *is* do-gooder-ish b/c it empowers the person with the problem to own both it and the solution. I just facilitate the thinking process.
