24 February 2006

i got so excited! [More:]
I went outside earlier and wandered around with the intent on doing yard work, but was coughing too much and gave up on that. So I looked for spring flowers. Hundreds of crocuses are coming up (foilage) so soon there will be color color color! But a few more random ones were in bloom and I photographed them.

So anyway, I was doing this when I saw SOME sort of mouse-like critter scurrying around under a shrub. It was solid black and really fluffy looking. An escaped gerbil or hamster maybe? Anyway I quickly started trying to photograph it and then realized the cap was still on. It went into a hole and under a railroad tie. Bye-bye fluffy-whatever thing!
Was it a shrew???

Could be. It wasn't native, whatever it was.

Or a vole?

I am an hour north of you, Weretable, and have a few daffodils in blossom. There is a HUGE stand of ferile daffodils along a country road on my way to work, marking the long gone driveway of a disappeared shack. Last fall wonder boy and I dug up a five gallon pailful of bulbs and put a couple hundred along the 12" strip of grass between our sidewalk and the road. They seem kind of scrawny this year, but hopefully they will be spectacular next year.
