I don't think he meant any harm.

I have this argument (or arguments like it) all the time with people. Sometimes you've got to sit back and realise that the only way some lessons are learnt is the hard way. Programmers definitely have an adolescence, and the best response after having good advice spurned is to smile knowingly at other ~~parents~~ experienced coders and whisper "Do you remember when we did stupid stuff like that."

Yes, but.

I've done stupid stuff, but not stupid stuff like that. If I get into something new, I examine it rigorously so I don't do canonically wrong stuff. Violating normal form isn't just stupid, it's canonically wrong.

But, yes, sometimes you must sit back.
