And it had a great sex scene (Hooper and Ms Brody). "Jaws" was a great book. The opening is scary indeed.

But, man, he wrote a lot of crap fiction after that: go read "White Shark" and tell me that's not terrible. RIP as a thriller writer. This post should be about his other efforts: to makes sharks (and the Great White) better understood.

He was not a great writer. Even jaws was not that good a book. But the movie made Jaws and shark mania one of the seventies pop culture touch points.

I have to disagree. "Jaws" was a great book. It was scary as anything. I think it opens like this:

"The great fish...."

Benchley may have been the ultimate "everyone has one great book in them" writer.

Still, sorry he's gone (relatively) young.

Three of his books touched a lot of people. It was popular art, not highbrow, not "literature." But isn't reaching out to an audience part of what art is all about?

He left his mark.
