I had a strange dream last night... [More:]When I was a kid, I lived in the partially-finished basement of our house. It had a carpet and a bathroom, so I was happy 'cos no one bothered me down there. But I would always find slugs roaming around, or abnormally large beetles hanging out on the toilet or other weird things. I used to make salt barriers around the carpet so I wouldn't be waking up to slime trails all over from the goddamn slugs all the time. Oh yeah, and there was this weird fungus thing that grew on the walls and the ceiling, and I would wash it off with bleach but it would just come back. Oh christ, and the huge rats in the unfinished part, the part that would flood in the rainstorms, just on the other side of a flimsy door from my living space. I could hear those fucking rats scratching around all night.

Aaaaaanyway, last night I dreamt that I was back in that room, and it was being invaded by worms and centipedes and spiders, all coming in from the hole in the bathroom wall and swarming all over the carpet. I first tried to stomp them all to death, but there were just too many. Then, giant black worms started invading, and I just couldn't kill them. They were huge! And they had some sort of armour on them, making them invincible. It was like the maggot apocalypse that I've told some of you about, only instead of maggots they were giant worms. Yeah, so I woke up right after I ran out of the room, abandoning it to the hordes of bugs that were feeding on each other and writhing in a giant black mass.

In conclusion, armchair MetaChat psychoanalyzing psychoanalysts...what does this mean?
pukes and retches while cogitating, then decides it's too hard to cogitate when so much ick is coming out. So he just continues retching.

I think this mean change is in your life.

I just had a dream with a Preying Mantis giving birth (instead of eggs) to thousands of little tiny mantids all over the house...

In Japanese tradition, we've just had the day when bugs officially start coming back, so I'd say we're just in tune with Mother Nature... :P

About your dream... I think the bugs are tied to your memory, but the dream is basically about feeling overwhelmed... so my vote is basically stress.

Yeah, MightyNez is probably right.

You took something that caused you anxiety as a child (no matter how much you otherwise liked being down there), and then expanded upon that with the kind of creepy crawly fear of things in the dark and insect-y to represent a certain kind of fear and anxiousness that you may or may not be feeling right now.

Or it could be random.

I mean, I woke up this morning from a dream where I was a passenger in a pickup truck that went over the railing on a curvy road into a lake, and although the truck hit the lake and started to sink on its side, passenger-side down, I tried to escape via the passenger door ('cause that's what side I was on). And it didn't work very well. I didn't get out before the dream ended.

So, I figure I had another dream about fear of being under someone else's control who is reckless, along with the useful lesson that if I'm ever in the same situation, trying to escape from the passenger side is stupid.

Stress, hmm. I shall take a relaxing and empowering bath this evening, then. Those bugs won't fuck with this guy tonight.

You're worried that stuff from your childhood is getting to you again. You locked those childhood traumas into that room, and they're still there, only they're even bigger, creepier and legion. Which is what will tend to happen if you just block stuff away and don't fully deal with it (or so they say, IANAPsychiatrist, I just play one on TV ;-) ) HOWEVER you symbolically managed to leave it behind when you left the room, which is very mentally healthy. Basically, your subconscious is letting you know that those issues are still there, but you can choose when to go in and deal with them - you have the power to leave whenever you want.
