Friday afternoon word game fun for metachat! [More:]Some of you will know this game as Fictionary, some (if you play the board game) as Balderdash.

The idea is,
1. one person (in this round = me) posts a word.
2. As many of you that want to email me (email in profile) a fictitious definition for this word.
3. After a period of time to gather definitions, I post the definitions, with the actual real one mixed in.
4. You all email me your votes
5. The winner is the person with the most points. Points are awarded thusly: If someone votes for your definition, 1 point. If you get the definition correct, 2 points.

If you like this game, we could keep a running tally of several rounds.

I suggest that definitions have to be to me by 4pm EST (1 hour from now). Then I will post definitions. Votes to me by 4.45 pm EST and I will have the results up by 5pm EST.

Obviously you are all on your honor to not google, use a dictionary to cheat etc. but really, where is the fun in that?

So who's in? The word for definition is MAINOUR
oh, and if you actually know the meaning of the word, you can still play. You just get an automatic 2 points.

by the way, if you email me, please include your username in the email so I can attribute properly. kthxbye

What if you make up a definition, and it accidentally is the correct definition? What then?!
posted by Capn 03 February | 15:14
I would love to play, but I can't send emails here. Have fun, guys.

Capn, I have never had that happen. But if you do, no doubt it will be worded differently than the real one, and you just get the votes you get.

Sometimes a word can invoke certain images and 2 ppl will make up very similar fake definitions. That's always funny.

awwww MeCha isn't so busy this afternoon. I got miko, Capn, dame and that's it. Well, I'll give it till 4 anyways.
posted by gaspode 03 February | 15:51
Sorry 'pode, I'll try to be more people.
posted by Capn 03 February | 15:54
hee Capn: I have an image of you trying *really hard*.

You look constipated.
posted by gaspode 03 February | 15:56
ooh, I just saw this... I've sent one.

I'll give it 10 more minutes and cross my fingers for more people. (cos it won't take 45 minutes for you all to vote)

OK then, I'll go ahead and post the definitions. As soon as you email me your votes I'll post the results.

1. stolen goods discovered on a thief
2. a young usually male servant in a household assigned to no specific task
3. a servant employed to do a variety of jobs
4. a minty sauce popular in Yemen
5. a wistful feeling of longing to return to life on the sea

But practically, does that ever happen? What? Oh.
posted by Capn 03 February | 16:15
We play that if someone unwittingly matches the real definition, the Master pulls that answer and doesn't offer it up for voting (but keeping the game's answer in). And the person who came up with it gets 2 points : )

just waiting for dame and miko to vote.
posted by gaspode 03 February | 16:28
Vote for me and everybody gets free hall passes and no more fifth period!
posted by Hugh Janus 03 February | 16:52
I voted now.
posted by dame 03 February | 16:52
I voted for dame.

Hi dame!

Mainour

That is to say, definition number 1.

Definitions were
1. correct
2. Capn
3. taz
4. dame
5. miko

Points are

Capn 3 (2 for correct answer, taz vote)
dame 2 (correct answer)
taz 1 (miko vote)

Nice one Capn and dame for getting it correct. Unfortunate that we only had 5 definitions. For reals, two people making up similar fake definitions does happen, but certainly not that frequently. Taz and Capn must be in each other's heads or something. And sometimes what happens is someone has the real def. in their subconscious and pulls it out from somewhere. Interesting that even with 2 similar definitions, 2 of you voted for one of those.

Anyway, I'm sad that not more people played because this game can be really fun. I've been playing via email with a group of friends from around the world for about 5 years now. Maybe we'll try again another time? This format worked smoothly, though.

Yes, please do this again gaspode!

I almost voted for taz'es's, assuming that I had, in fact, heard the definition before and dregged that up for my "made-up" one.
posted by Capn 03 February | 17:01
That's exactly what I did, Capn.

Yes, let's play again! I love these sorts of games. (Plus now I have whip the Capn's ass.)

Hi Hugh.

Cool! glad you like this game. I'm happy to run a few rounds and keep out of the actual game. Or not. Whatev.

Maybe I'll post a word Monday morning. Hrrmmm.

Again!

What's wrong with making a longer time limit?
posted by agropyron 03 February | 18:46
absolutely nothing, agro. I just thought of it at 3, and was pandering to my fellow east-coasters who maybe only posted from work.

I think I'll do it again on Monday, post the word in the morning (EST), and wait till like 2pm to get all the definitions in. Something like that.
