A few years ago TCM showed, among others, No Regrets For Our Youth, Stray Dog, and Drunken Angel as part of a Kurosawa festival. Characters grapple with various desperations, shoring barriers against a strikingly chaotic outside world. A fascinating counterpoint to the hopeless and strangely uplifting Ikiru. More edifying than entertaining, though.
