Una pregunta muy importante: Partridges or Bradys?→[More:] Netflix sent me the season one DVD of the Partridge Family tonight. My fandom of that show is well documented, so I'm in hog heaven. So far there have been guest appearances by Ray Bolger, Harry Morgan, & Richard Pryor (!). The Brady's appeal mainly rests in kitsch, but the Partridges was actually a funnier, hipper show. Plus David cassidy & Shirley Jones could actually sing. And they cranked out some great bubblegum hits. and Danny was an appealing little smartass who I realted to as a kid. And Lori was way hotter than Marcia. And they had the best opening credits in TV history. So are you a Paridge person or a Brady Person?

and I remeber watching it in reruns back when I was around six, (that'd be 1976), so it was still contemporary, and I remember owning a Partridge Family coloring book as a kid, too. Also, the avocado appliances in their house make me all gooey. And a very young Farrah Fawcett has a cameo in episode Two in a sexy cutaway minidress. Ah, pop culture bliss.

I haven't seen The Partridge Family since its first run (and if that doesn't date me, nothing will). The Brady Bunch is a little fresher in my memory - I think I last watched it in syndication in Sacramento, back around '88 - '89 or so.

If you view The Brady Bunch as science fiction, it's not bad. Plus, y'all can keep Marcia; Eve Plumb as Jan Brady = hotness.

Partridges definitely had better music, by far. Although Greg as Johnny Bravo was pretty fuckin' hi-larious.

To sum up: I dunno.

I like the Partridge family better than the Bradys, totally, and the Monkees and Batman better than both of them, but the Bradys were always on and the Partridges never were. So I think I've only ever seen like 3 Partridge episodes but I have seen so much Brady Bunch in my life that it has become a permanent - and kind of creepy - part of my brain.

p.s. The Monkees ROCK.

The Monkees do indeed rock. I loved watching them as a kid and remeber buying an LP of theirs at a tag sale when I was around 7. And I keep hoping that some boy band or pop diva will do a Monkees and rebel and do their own thing.

Wasn't there a "New Monkees" sometime in the 90s? And yes, I grew up wanting to be Mike Nesmith. (I actually sold him some blank tape once. He wasn't happy to be recogized. Perhaps he was having a bad day.)

Mike wrote 'Different Drum,' which earns him a place in my pantheon. (and I love Linda Ronstadt's voice- and she used to be hawt but Mike's original is even better).

But back to the Partridges and their who millieux in general. This book is a great explication of bubblegum's historical importance and it brilliantly demolishes a lot of cultural myths along the way.

I grew up wanting to date Mike Nesmith - well, once I realized that Davey was too short, even when I was 11, Peter Tork was too weird, and Mickey Dolenz was almost certainly an asshole.

This whole discussion is interesting in that it shows how much quicker pop cultural history moves than history in general. Last night, I watched an episode of CSI guest starring Faye Dunaway*. Her appearance was presented as the return of a great old dame, but in true historical terms she's still very contemporary if you think about it. Plus it was nice seeing the scene where grissom sits down next to her and flirts. For a guy of William Peterson's demographic (hell, a guy of mine, Faye is still sexy) that must've been an adolescent fantasy come true.

*she was also married (for a while) to Peter Wolf, lead singer of my beloved J. Geils Band.

The Monkees were an entirely different genre, they were a band, not a family. So, no apology neccessary, since I dig the monkees, too.

jrossi4r: that's exactly my point, as fun as the Bradys were to watch, the Partridges were more real. and they had better music (although I'll admit to grooving to 'Time To Change' every now and then, especially since it was featured on my oft-mentioned mix-from-my-lesbian-ex)

while watching, pips said that Keith looked like a more wholesome version of her ex-con outlaw biker half-brother. I've hung with the dude, I can kinda see it. And yes, Faye is gorgeous. She'll always be Bonnie to me.

Oh I love me some Faye Dunaway. If If I had seen her on the street, I would have had to say something to her. It would probably be annoying and she would probably get all bitchy on me and that would be AWESOME.

I'm not denying that the Partridges kept it (relatively)realerer, jon. I like the Bradys for their complete lack of real. They're unapologetically silly.

While I certainly like me some Partridge Family tunes now and then, I gotta say I'm a Brady girl all the way (Christopher Knight being my first serious crush, at the age of about 5). Plus the house used for the exterior shots of Chez Brady is near my boyfriend's 'hood, so that adds to the excellence factor for me.

The Bradys were on more often in my house than the Partridges--maybe different then-indie channels picked them up for syndication? My brother was the big TV watcher, though--I preferred books.
The Valley Drug Jan visits in one episode was a few blocks from my house--the structure ripped down for more parking spaces and the business moved to a strip mall.

There was a girl two years ahead of me at Bradford College who was completely aspie for the Monkees.

I always thought Shawn Cassidy was cuter than David. And I'll agree the P fam had better music and a higher hip factor. Although Alice kicked ass on the BB.

We rented a beach house with a buncha folks one summer that had open backed stairs - like the tread part only. We forever referred to it as the Brady Bunch house trip.

also, you needed 100 episodes for syndication back then, i think, and Partridge Family only did 96. It's really unknown to many, unlike the Brady Bunch.
