Actually, they're trying to pattent the idea of a button that automatically enters an emoticon or displays a selection of emoticons for you.

Which is dumber? I don't know.

You can't patent ideas. You can't trademark ideas. You can't copyright ideas. You can trademark looks and expressions, copyright images and executed things (film, art, music) and patent inventions.

So they're prolly trying to patent a widget-dodah that makes emoticons.
