From the first time I saw the skyline (late at night, driving north from the airport), I was smitten.
the ability of rich outsiders to transform a community into a service station for momentary pleasuresselfnoise, that's what I fear is happening to Asheville, a very fast and toxic transformation into Aspen. I hate it; a lot of us hate it, but I don't know if it can be changed, if it's too late, or even how to go about making it stop. One night in the bar my friends and I came up with a plan to mug each other regularly & report it to the cops every time, thus driving up the crime statistics and scaring away the rich baby boomer retirees who are buying up all the real estate & turning downtown into disneyland, but we never did it and I doubt it would work anyway.
