Last.FM Idolatry So, "Since U Been Gone" is the top song last week, and not the semi-ironic Ted Leo version, either. All you un-ironic faux hipsters have got a lot to answer for!

OK, I may have been one of them.

Top artist this week was Radiohead. I'd worry there was some regressing toward the mean going on, but they're tied with the freakin' Flaming Lips. And Coldplay is still wayyyyyy down tied for #144 -- with freakin' Vangelis.

Well, there are some nice bands tied for #144 too.
I think Tom Waits' stock is up this week over his usual standing.

I like looking at these charts. Some of the stuff I listened to is actually on there for a change, which is cool.

I heard that Kelly Clarkson song is actually good and is getting some seriosu respect, although i dont think I've heard it.

And maybe Radiohead should try writing a song 1/100th as good as "Do You Realize?," and then maybe they'll be ranked higher than the Flaming Lips.

I love that Kelly Clarkson, and I don't care who knows it.

My last.fm stats don't really represent what I'm listening to at all, since I do most of my listening on yon iPod and those stats aren't moved.

Capn: I use audiopod to get about 7 hours a day of ipod listening logged on last.fm. If you have a mac, I can't help you.
posted by matildaben 23 January | 14:16
The Flaming Lips kick ass! I will have to upload one of the more unusual tracks I have by them.

Capn, my iTunes play count updates each day when I sync my iPod up to my Mac. Doesn't yours?

That looks ugly but functional matildaben (much like myself), I'll give it a try tonight.

iTunes play counts do not transfer to the audioscrobbler plug-in.

I want to know who the other user(s) are who are matching up with me down at the low end of the artists chart? There isn't a way to do that on the site is there (with the free account)?

I know I was one of two users playing the following artists of the 256 slot last week: Gang of Four, Bad Brains, Drive Like Jehu, 7 Seconds, Frank Black, The Damned, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, NoMeansNo, Slayer, The Birthday Party, Pretty Girls Make Graves.

Everytime I look at the stats, that's what I think about at the low end of the artists count which is where many of mine seem to reside (in the 2 and 3 other users range).

Short of a way to actually do this, maybe someone will come out of the woodwork.

I was the other person who listened to Pretty Girls Make Graves last week (I think it was last week). None of the others though.

I have a paid account, and I can't tell that either, safetyfork. It would be cool to know exactly who played what by clicking on the links. I'd also like to know more about the Neighbors thing. I can tell who my neighbors are, but I can't tell who has me listed as their neighbor (or can I?). When I look at all of my neighbors, I'm nowhere on their charts, which means that they all have people that match them more closely than I do. I want to see who has me as their closest match, and I don't know how to do that.

Thanks for the reply (w/inside perspective of paid account), iconomy. I would love that feature so I could get to know the users in the group more. Neighbours is kind of neat, but it's also seemed somewhat limited to me as well. Maybe your tastes are too eclectic!

I agree: Why not see who you in group you are sharing specific artists / play tastes with by clicking the artist? They have the data! And you'd think the overhead wouldn't be so great.
posted by safetyfork 23 January | 15:23
Whoops. That could use some editing, but I think the general drift is recognizable.
posted by safetyfork 23 January | 15:25
I've been listening to PGMG too, but only starting yesterday, when I downloaded a leak of their forthcoming album (excellent, by the way), so I won't show up on the chart with them until next week.

safetyfork, i'm pretty sure i listened to the Birthday Party and Gang of Four last week. Outside that, this list makes me feel pretty alone. Anyone else?

Fenriq - is there some setting that allows you to do this? I feel my lists would be significantly different if it showed my iPod stuff. As is, most of my stats come from listening to the Last.FM radio thing, which is always at work, never home.
posted by Hellbient 23 January | 15:49
Well, hey glad to see some of the "low-numbered-artists listeners" coming out to the party.

I feel a bit left out of the high numbers of the list but my stats would also change if I could include home, and/or iPod listening. I think then some more lower octane(?) stuff would seep into my stats. However, after downloading the scrobbler it looks like I'm a couple of OS versions behind. I'll have to fix that in the near future.

We could always join forces and get radiohead out of the top ten for once. Just for one week - it would be fun ;)

The question of "group musical neighbors" has been brought up before in the Last.FM forums. Word is that it would be neat but computationally too expensive.

Neighbors are all calculated (globally) for you, unless you're a subscriber. Then you can add people as neighbors. The only thing this is useful for, though, is playing neighbor radio. Anyway, I thought IRC during MeCha radio was the way for people to find their tuneful soulmates around here.

Radiohead is infamously the top artist at Last.FM, but it isn't ours every week. Last week, it was the Decemberists (and the top track was Neutral Milk Hotel). I should post these updates every week, I guess!

The iPod deal is a big one for a lot of people. Last.FM isn't perfect and that's a major way. People also complain that track length isn't recorded, or that their little sister listened to some stuff, or that they can't record what they listen to at work or (!) on the radio. Ultimately Last.FM is trying to be what it CAN be and not a be-all musical talisman. Are people who don't have their iPod listens recorded really ending up with unrepresentative profiles, in the long run? I dunno, doesn't seem like it would be that way to me.

And for my part, "Karma Police" is much more than 1/100th the song that "Do You Realize?" is.

yeah, totally. I generally listen to that Last.FM radio thing by creating custom stations (the "play music like these artists" thing). I'm a little more forgiving with the forward button, because it often plays stuff I've never heard and I wanna give it a chance. When listening on the iPod, i skip around or listen to an entire album (that often Last doesn't list), which can really bump an artist up.

But I'm not complaining at all - I really love the whole deal. And I've found out about a bunch of new stuff I wouldn't have otherwise.
posted by Hellbient 23 January | 16:53
stilicho, definitely don't take my wanting more from it as complaint. It would be more of a good thing in my book.

I'd like to see what people in my group were playing that I was playing on a more specific level. I might even pay for that.

Am I misreading this? I use iTunes with audioscrobbler... that said, I haven't bothered to look at my page since I got my iPod, because I won't and can't sync my iPod with the iTunes on my Powerbook (Poddy's three times the size of my iBook hard drive, for a start, so it's all on the pod, on original cds or on cds which I burn for backup).

But yeah! Who is the Libertines fan around here? Wanna commiserate?
posted by jokeefe 23 January | 17:27
I think matildaben was referring to this caveat about using audiopod to transfer your iPod listening:

Do not listen to any tracks using your audio player or the last.fm radio until you have synced your iPod. If you do, your iPod played tracks will not go through due to the AudioScrobbler spam protection. The spam protection disallows any tracks to be submitted that have a timestamp before the most recently played track.

safetyfork, yeah, sometimes my explaining Last.FM bleeds over into defending them. It's an insecurity thang.

Hmm... looks like my last.fm broke somewhere. I haven't been updating for eons.

No worries.
posted by safetyfork 24 January | 10:52
I got audiopod installed, working and talking to iScrobbler, but it's not automagic, which means I have to remember to run it, which means I probably won't.

But I'll try.

The Internets need to know what I'm listening to.
