Holy crap. It might actually get colder than freezing tonight. *grabs extra blankets, closes windows*
We need some rain or wind or something 'cause the smog and dust is getting pretty thick. Having grown up in LA this sort of brown air gack doesn't usually bother me, but it's getting almost Mexico City bad. I keep waking up all choke-throated and irritated.
And it's so, so dry. It's almost like I can't physically drink enough water to stay hydrated. Today I drank almost 2 gallons of water.
Well, if it makes you feel better, I am stuck in tropical Townsville this week for work. It is currently a warm 25c and the sun has just set, so I can no longer enjoy the view from my hotel out over the palm trees to the Pacific Ocean and Magnetic Island, with the Barrier Reef in the distance. I am about to take a leisurely stroll to find some dinner. Apparently it rained here all last week, so the air is clean and fresh and everything is lovely and green.
dg, the missus wants to move to Cairns. I don't think I could stand the humidity, although I have just applied for a job in Darwin. And also one in Roxby Downs, where it can head towards 45c in the summer.
Here, it's 10:30 at night and a balmy 25c as well, but dry as a bone. And heading to 40c by the end of the week. Rain is just a rumour at this time of the year.
Where exactly does have the climate I'm after? Somewhere with warm, 25c days and crisp 10c nights? Somewhere where it rains lots so my garden will grow, but the rain only comes at night so it doesn't disturb my routine. Except, sometimes it can rain in the early evening so I can watch it from my porch. Somewhere where the humidity sits around a nice 50%, and where it snows two or three times a year for something different? Somewhere with an occasional spectacular lightning storm, but with no hail, cyclones, tornados, blizzards or dust storms. Also, somewhere where quiet, pleasant waiters bring me mixed drinks, and every waves as you drive by. Anyone got any ideas? I really think such a place should exist.
Jimbob, Cairns is nice, but I think if I was going to move to North Queensland, I would prefer Townsville because Cairns is way too tourism-oriented. This may seem strange coming from someone who lives on the Gold Coast, but at least there we have things other than tourism and you can swim at the beaches, which is not the case in almost all of FNQ - if the marine stingers don't get you, the crocodiles will. Either way, the real estate prices are going to kill you.
As for your ideal climate, when you find it let me know, because I am moving in next door. I will even get my own drinks, if forced to.
You can have some of our rain. We didn't make the Seattle record since it stopped raining on Sunday (Saturday was day 27), but apparently it still rained in Portland and they were on day 29 yesterday (don't know about today).
That's weird because here it hasn't went below freezing in several weeks. Odd considering that according to "Pocket Ref" we have one of the lowest average temps.
Yeah, flopsy, I get my hair cut by a Muscovite here in Queens and he's pretty brutal with the short hair in the cold weather. I think he sizes men up by how much they shiver after leaving out the barbershop with a fresh trim. Minus 22°C, indeed.
I refuse to freeze in the face of that sort of bullying, really toughing it out, so he slaps me on the shoulder and says, "Howyadoin' buddy" whenever I see him.
