What do you wish you were good at? Me, I want to be a dancer.[More:]Not any sort of dancer- a hip-hop dancer. The kind you see doing backup for all the rap and pop stars (or doing break-dancing in the subway- that'd be acceptable, too). At present, I'm a better dancer than the average person, due to some lessons and rhythm, but I still have too much white-girl clunkiness to ever make it as a professional. ::sigh::

I want to sing like Aretha.

HAHAHA! but seriously...

I could list these forever!
- Approaching women.
- Drawing.
- Piano.

Anything. or at least anything useful or entertaining.

i wish i could play guitar, like really play the shit out of it. mostly, i just wish "rock star" was a viable career option.

I should have learned several languages when I was a child. I blame my parents.

Nor is it cold.

Top 3:

- Singing
- Dancing
- Playing an instrument so I can busk in the subways and on street corners with the best of them

It's all about earning extra money for me.

ya know, anyone can be good at singing. Not 'american idol' good, but you can practice and be good at singing. Unless your tonedeaf, in which case, please do us all a favor and give up.

I've thought of doing that for stand-up comedy, but somehow, "Anyone here from outta town?" dosen't work as well on mass transit.

Not derailing every thread I get into and playing music would be really nice.

And drawing and some languages would also be nice.

I'm already good at cooking, fairly good at shooting a gun, decent at first aid and I can hold my liquor like a motherfucker, so what else is there?
posted by Divine_Wino 13 January | 12:41
I wish I could sing. I'm not even wishing for an amazing voice, just one that doesn't make small children cry.

The worst bit is, I'm not tone deaf - I can hear how bad I sound. I just can't seem to transduce that into producing tuneful sounds.
posted by gaspode 13 January | 12:41
Math, music, money. Just round up all the "m" things; I'm bad at all of them.
posted by taz 13 January | 12:42
Another rock star wanna be. I wish I could play any instrument at all, but all I can play is Blackbird on the guitar. Still, that looks good, and then I just smile and pass the guitar to the next person.

The trapeze, Wino. There's always the trapeze.

Progamming (seriously, I do it for a living, but I feel like there's so much I don't know).
Getting motivated and organized.
Figuring out if people are going to screw me over before they actually do it.
posted by matildaben 13 January | 12:44
I work next to that stupid trapeze school from sex in the city, I should look into that.
posted by Divine_Wino 13 January | 12:45
You know, people who sing poorly like to sing, too. Suck it, haters.

I wish I were a really good swimmer. Like Michael Phelps good. Or Katie Hoff good, even. Or Ian Crocker good. Also, I'd like to be good at actually getting down to doing my writing. And good at getting new jobs.
posted by dame 13 January | 12:46
Playing an instrument. Any instrument. except the triangle, I got that down.
posted by dabitch 13 January | 12:48
I wish I could sing. And I, too, love to sing despite having no talent. Which is unfortunate, as my roommate is a musician, never believes me, and tries to catch me singing so he can figure out if he could use me as a backup vocalist. (ha!)

But, more usefully, I wish I could manage my money. I suck at that, I can't even balance a checkbook.

Really? Do you see them going out for smoke breaks in satin tights, have the occasional errant student flying through the window and like that?
posted by jonmc 13 January | 13:02
Also, speaking of subway performers, I really love the Cagle Family who perform at Times Square a lot. I need to buy their CD.
posted by jonmc 13 January | 13:05
Holding on to things. I keep dropping them and it's very annoying. Hard on the toes, also.

The Languages: Japanese and French. To be honest, I could use some help with English, too.
The Maths: Geometry and Calculus.
The Arts: Painting, and Singing (while playing bass -- I still haven't got that down.)
Programming: what I do for $$ is adjacent to this, and therefore I can hack my way through some things that surprise even me. But I have met a couple of really stellar programmers who always make me wish I was really good at it.
The Sports: I'm no slouch on the soccer field, but I really wish I was good at playing basketball.
posted by safetyfork 13 January | 14:03
I, too, would like to be able to play the guitar. Lovely, acoustic stuff like Martin Tielli (as I posted in my largely ignored first post - you bastards!)

MGL, now I know two people who can play ONLY blackbird. Very odd that.
posted by richat 13 January | 14:20
also, I wish I could shimmy like my sister Kate.

Whew...thought I had killed another thread with my thoughts.

I too would like to be able to shimmy like jon's sister Kate, now that you mention it.
posted by richat 13 January | 14:49
I think Jon was referring to me (Kate) as his "sister" (Jon as my brother! ahhhhh!)

Unless he actually has a sister Kate who can shimmy.

Well, at least you wouldn't have much of an example to live up to.
posted by jonmc 13 January | 14:55
You'd be my little brother, naturally; I can't imagine it the other way around.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 13 January | 14:58
Pink, darling, I'm more than a decade older than you (chronologically, at least).

I wish I could drive like any of a dozen Finnish rally drivers. Ari Vatanen, for example.

I wish I could dance in a manner that people could watch without pointing and laughing.

I realize this, jonmc, but you have the spirit of a bratty little brother. And I have the spirit of a bossy older sister (because that's what I am).

I stand by my comment TPS. "Shimmy like my sister Kate" sounds cool, like Lou Reed might have written it.
