Are you lucky? While in Chicago, we went see Match Point and, predictably, had a number of conversations on the topic of luck.[More:]

What is your concept of luck (for example, does it differ from fate)? Do you feel lucky? Why or why not? How important do you feel the role of luck has played in your life? Has your concept of luck changed with experience or age? If so, how?
As usual, I'm on my way out the door, so no answers from me for several hours, at the very least.

Luck is when the sheer randomness of the universe goes your way.

Do you feel lucky?

Depends on how you look at. I'm not rich or accomplished and I got the usual troubles, so maybe I'm unlucky. But I'm not a prisoner-of-war or a child slave or a murder victim so maybe I am lucky.

I did used to know a girl who was in attendance at both Abbot and Righetti's no-hitters. I've been watching baseball for 3 decades and I've never even seen a no-hitter on TV. The Yankees should pay her to go to games.

I am very much unlucky. Seriously.

But I'm not a prisoner-of-war or a child slave or a murder victim so maybe I am lucky.

See, to me that means you're fated. Positively. As am I. I have a good family who helps me out and loves me. I have no major illnesses. I wasn't born into starvation. That stuff is good situation, not luck.

Unlucky, to me, means that weird, bad things happen to you without any provocation (from you). Or, on the flip side, weird, good things don't happen to you out of the blue.

And I am unlucky.

I'm damn lucky, even though I don't feel it at all right now. I have fantastic, bright, funny friends, a good place to live, enough money to get by at least for the next 10 days, and am not dying from anything. I have been married, have owned loving pets, and have a romantic and caring soul.

I am so unlucky, I am amazed that I've managed to live as long as I have.

I'm unspeakably lucky. Compared to all the women who live now or who have ever lived in human history, I am freer, richer in choices and opportunities, blessed with more opportunities to chart my own life and control my own existence, than all but a minute fraction of them.

Which is not to say I've always, or usually, made good use of that privilege. But that's my bad decisions, not bad luck, and I've gotten a better handle on that fact as I've gotten older. Even having had the opportunity to blow those decisions makes me, again, unspeakably lucky.

I don't think I'm particularly lucky or unlucky. However, the only thing I really have going for me is that the god/dess of parking spots adores me.

I consider myself very, very lucky. Aside from the situational luck stuff referred to by mudpuppie, katallison, and eamondaly, I am:

Lucky in love (like win-the-big-big-lottery lucky)

Lucky in finding really cool apartments

Lucky professionally (this was more in the past, really)

Lucky in health

I feel lucky that I'm not living in the U.S. right now, for several reasons: Political climate; I missed Katrina (and if I hadn't left, I would still have been in New Orleans); quality of life in terms of, mostly, what you might call the sanitation, regulation and "ClearChannelization" of nearly everything in the U.S.

I don't really have money-luck, and I'm profoundly unlucky in kitchens. Every place I've ever lived in has pretty much had a really small, sub-par kitchen.
