Soap Box Time! [More:]The NYT has a good article on diabetes in today's online version (I've linked to the printable version - I don't think you have to register for that). The article is fairly NYC-centric (statistics and such) but informative nonetheless. [ Other resources are the American Diabetes Association, the Canadian Diabetes Assocation and Diabetes UK. ]

A lot of people who have diabetes don't know it. The next time you're at your doctor's office - tell him/her you want to be tested. If you have a friend with diabetes, ask if you can try his/her blood glucose meter (I'd be glad to do it if someone asked). If your sugar levels are above normal - get a real test done. It doesn't matter if no one in your family has it - you can still get diabetes (I'm the only diabetic in my family). It's an awful chronic illness that leads to blindness, amputation, kidney failure and other complications. No matter how you go about it - get tested.

That article freaked me out. I'm scared now that I have diabetes! How would I know?

Me too ThePinkSuperhero. I think I'm going to have some wheat toast and go jogging now, or something. Seriously, this is some pretty scry stuff, and I'm going to ask for a test at my next check-up.

One of the reasons I love my doctor (have I mentioned I love my e-mail-using, overprotective, sensitive, fantastic physician?) is that he screens me yearly for diabetes, thyroid and cholesterol levels--all things that other doctors considered me "too young" to worry about, but that are in my family history. He also does an annual head-to-toe skin check. Every time I read an article like this, it reminds me why I drive an hour (more when there's traffic) to see him.

Type 2 Diabetes runs down the line on both sides of my family (more so my father's side, though.) I could stand to lose weight and my diet isn't the greatest...aka, I'm probably a ticking time bomb for Type 2 diabetes. Last year at work we had a health fair and one of the things offered was a free glucose screening. I was terrified of what I would find out but I decided to get one. Imagine my relief (and surprise!) when I found out that my glucose was not only normal, but on the lower side of normal! I'm still trying to improve my eating habits and things, but I feel a lot better about things.

Last time I was checked I was pre-diabetic, and I haven't had a doctor in a while. I did lose about 25 pounds, but I need to lose more. I know that my gum disease is a probable diabetic complication -- my dentist told me that.

I'm really worried that when I can afford health insurance again, I won't be able to get it, even if I'm working my ass off to live healthier.
