Do you ever feel the earth move under your feet? Okay, this isn't about sex (sorry!), but about earthquakes... If you are interested in earthquakes, earthquake safety, self-promoting hucksters, or internet hoaxes, go have a look at andrew cooke's C[omp]UTE blog entry on asshole Douglas Copp, and his dangerous asshole advice on surviving earthquakes (the meaty link is this one - PDF). If you live in an earthquake zone and ever read and took to heart Copp's advice about the "Triangle of Safety" this is a must-read, because that advice could kill you.
don't be sorry

I hope this guy is prosecuted, though crushed and buried would be better. It infuriates me that people are going to die because of his self-promoting bogus bullshit.

Sargent said he recognized the self-appointed, most experienced rescue chief in the worldó the red jump suit and video camera and lack of credentials.
"He turned around and I said, 'Oh, no,' '' Sargent said. "Anybody who's legitimate in this business knows who this knucklehead is."

and no one did anything?

Damn! I can't believe this... There is right now on TV an emergency report about a big earthquake in Larissa (Greece). I think it's Larissa... Damn.

i can't even get bbc
posted by ethylene 08 January | 06:53
not Larissa... Southern Greece close to the island of Kithira. No details about damage/injury yet.

No animals in my house, and the insects are making themselves scarce... Anyway, it's the big red dot here. Here's a real-time seismicity page.

According to tv, this is affecting southern and central Greece. I didn't feel it here in n. Greece, and I just called my husband who didn't feel it where he is, in Pelion, centralish Greece (halfway between Thessaloniki and Athens). Of course, he's on top of a mountain, which has got to help.

I hope this isn't bad, in terms of injury/fatality.

There's a report here. I hope everyone's OK over there.

i'm going to look for the squashy map.
i don't think google can handle "squashy map"

I can't understand a lot of what being said on tv... it looks like they're spotlighting Xania, Crete, which worries me. It all worries me, but I have a friend/former student in Xania.

As far as the today-Greece earthquake goes, everything is good.

As far as Douglas Copp, dangerous, fraudulent asshole (hello google!), is concerned... please, everyone who knows someone in an earthquake zone - warn them about Douglas Copp, imposter, creep, and potential/likely second-hand murderer!
posted by taz 08 January | 12:46
The triangle void stuff makes sense to me, but that fraud shit is scary.

Taz, is your part of Greece earthquake country?
posted by mudpuppie 08 January | 18:07
Hi, pupps! Yes, it's all earthquake country 'round here... something I didn't quite consider before moving here. I hate earthquakes.
