i heard about this law back during the schiavo hubub. bush is, in my book, some sort of passive/aggressive psychopath. wherever he goes, people die. just never directly from his hands at their throats. when i think about the slaughter in iraq, i just know his bedsheets are crusty with the dried secretions of his orgasmic deathlust@&^%**(+++ATH NO CARRIER
I do remember this being brought up during the Schiavo fiasco, as a way to point out the blatantly silly hypocrisy of Boosh. I fail to see why there is not more outcry about this situation from the same people who screamed bloody murder (pretty much literally) during the Schiavo hysteria.
And to atone for my strident Mefi-like tone, I give you this.

Because Schiavo was white and not poor. It really is that simple and (as p & c says) disgusting.
Well, it's been a while since I burst into tears at my desk.
I do remember something about this law during the Schiavo debate. Then, though, it was a child being taken off life support, against the mother's wishes.
This is horrifying at first blush, but if you read the original stories on local news sites, you notice several things:
1. She wanted to wait until her mom could come from Africa before they pulled the plug. My first impression is that the mom probably missed her daughter's death by a day or two, but there is really no indication that's the case; it may have been months (we don't know).
2. By pulling the plug, we don't know if she was missing out on days, weeks or months of life.
3. We don't know whether there was another need for the equipment or other resources being used to prolong her life.
4. All of the above are unknowns, but no matter how you fill them in, it seems horrible, really. But for me, the kicker is this: if this is such a tragedy, why did it not hit the media until AFTER the woman's death, when the family was given 10 days notice?
For some reason, this whole story sounds like someone looking for an opportunity to use this law to attack the conservative right. It almost strikes me that a reporter waited in the weeds until after a person was killed by this law, then stirred the whole thing up by breaking the story.
For the record, I'm an anti-Bush, anti-conservative, liberal Democrat. But something about this story and the way it broke just doesn't smell right.
