"That will help reduce the federal budget deficit." The best laugh I've had in awhile.
Well, it will, as much as any other revenue of 10M. But it's a bizarre thing to say and seems to be carrying water for someone.

This switch has been delayed once, hasn't it? My uncle is a TV broadcast engineer and his station has already everything in place and he can't wait to make the switch completely.

it must be their fault for not reading Fortune.

The sale of this valuable, scarce real estate is expected to bring in about $10 billion, maybe more. That will help reduce the federal budget deficit.

Yes, it'll help - but that's like giving a homeless person a couple of pennies (post-90% copper pennies).

To avoid a consumer revolt, Congress has set aside about $1.5 billion to smooth the transition. Owners of outmoded TV sets will be eligible for two vouchers, worth $40 each, to help buy converter boxes that will enable today's analog TV sets to receive digital signals....

People are supposed to apply for the vouchers during a three-month window in 2008, and use them within three months. But there probably won't be enough vouchers to go around, and no one really knows how much converter boxes will cost. Disadvantaged people are most likely to be left behind in the scramble.

The nightmare scenario is that people who depend on free, over-the-air TV for news and entertainment will lose their access, or have to pay more for it, so that the rest of us can get faster service on our Blackberries and ESPN on our cell phones.

Can't people do any fucking research this week? There are boxes now, and they're generally $150 and up. In three or four years, they'll be cheaper and way better, just like everything else. People will still get free over-the-air TV, as long as they're equipped for it. Forty bucks should cover a cheap one. And God knows, if there's one thing people are sure to spend money on it's for more fucking TV. Sure the government is mishandling this shit like only the government can, but give me a break.

I have a feeling that in 2009 it will be put off again. Nobody wants to be the President that killed television.
