I'm going to create a new diet that requires one to eat only cute animals. preferably alive.

Tim Cahill:

It is what biologists call "fubsy." The theory has it that we, as humans, are hardwired to protect our progeny, and as a result we are also instinctively protective of creatures that possess attributes common to human infants. Clumsy animals, preferably chubby ones with large eyes, big heads, and short limbs, are said to be fubsy.

Yeah, it's infants. And Cahill should have also mentioned the other traits from the second link: wrinkles and fuzz. Very young infants have both.

Ya know, I'm going to come right out and say it: I don't like infants. I think they're kinda creepy.

Me too, jrossi. Give me kittens or puppies instead.

How funny... I saw a special about this years ago on the Discovery channel (or something), and brought it up just the other day when "cuteness" came up in conversation.

This is truly fantastic. UWS: small flat nose - check; round body - check; eyes face forward and wrinkled skin - check; body fuzz? check check check.

Yet Im not cute. What gives?

Another big word you can look up is "neoteny" if you want to read more about this phenomenon.

Yesterday, croctommy and I impressed Lipstick Thespian by spouting off stuff we'd read in popular writings about evolutionary psychology. Something about how the most symmetrical specimens are the most preferred as a mate.

The human cuteness detector is set at such a low bar, researchers said, that it sweeps in and deems cute practically anything remotely resembling a human baby or a part thereof, and so ends up including the young of virtually every mammalian species, fuzzy-headed birds like Japanese cranes, woolly bear caterpillars, a bobbing balloon, a big round rock stacked on a smaller rock, a colon, a hyphen and a close parenthesis typed in succession.

Ha! I was going to ask if the turtle was in a plastic bucket and if matildaben had a microwave in her office, so I am running way ahead of you.

Tarantulas have round bodies, they're fuzzy, they have at least a few forward facing eyes. Cute? Adorable!

I don't know... ET always gave me the creeps - and isn't the Alien warrior round like the volkswagon bug and has a short flat nose?

That turtlette is definitely not fuzzy.

(I love the baby penguin from the NYTimes link, though.)

OMG Hugh that's the cutest, most beautiful picture!

Can I have one of those? Please?
