02 January 2006

Taking a leave of absence. [More:]
As I mentioned previously, I'm taking some serious time off from the internet. I've promised myself to get back to my writing in 2006 and I am a *terrible* (ie, great) procrastinator--I can't seem to spend just a little time on the internet. As a result, it's all or nothing and this year the coin's landed on the side of nothing.

I have two half-completed novels and four screenplays in various states of undress. I'm attempting to get the scripts completed by May 1 in order to enter (yet again) the Nicholl Fellowship. I also hope to finish one of the novels by year-end.

I have set up a mailing list for those interested in dobbsian happenings and whereabouts. If you wish to keep current on my status on these projects, and other things in my life, feel free to sign up. At the very least I will be doing a mailout once a month, but they may happen as frequently as weekly. It's a closed list (no email addresses shared or revealed) and two way (so you can write back to me, though others on the list won't see your replies). I will also do my best to send links to MP3s with each mailing so if you've dug my music posts, you might want to sign up for that alone. (Just scroll to the bottom of each mailout and the links'll be there.) The list is opt-in (confirmation is emailed) and all emails will begin with [dobbs updates] - subject if you want to set up a filter.

I may also send links to excerpts of the writing, depending on ... various factors, I guess. I haven't decided yet.

I may also also end up scrapping the list and finishing Bludge (just a test page, nothing much works), but that's seriously on the backburner for now. If it does happen, the list'll know first.

Anyway, enough of my babbling. I thank you all for a fun and interesting 2005 here on MetaChat. You've all been very helpful with my silly questions about furniture, fashion, and music. I hope 2006 treats you well.

Note that 1) the email address in my profile still works and 2) I will check back to this thread once a day throughout the week and then I'll be gone. Again, thanks for a great (though unproductive) year! You'll be missed.
Despite our occasional dustups, I have enjoyed your intelligent, funny presence. You will be missed. Enjoy your time away. While your out there, find out for me, are fire engines still red?

Hey, thanks again, dobbs, it was nice having you here. And good luck, too!

Brave new world, dobbs! We'll miss you, and hope to see you in the future, but I totally understand your decision. I hope 2006 is wonderfully productive and inspiring.

Good luck, dobbs. I hope your year goes well.

Hey, someone could sign up for your updates and post them here - that'd be cool.

Dobbs, you are a stronger man than I. I try to unplug and try to get back to my books and stories but the allure, the siren song of the internet (MeFi and MeCha being large voices in the chorus!) brings me back in.

What I think I'm going to try and do is set limits. Say 50 minutes work, 10 minutes fluffing (no, not that kind of fluffing) or something to that effect.

Good luck on the books and screenplays. Maybe we could have a once a week or once a month thread chat about writing that you could partake of and still call it working on the writing?

That sounds like an excellent idea, fenriq!

A few years ago I dropped out of the Internet totally (not even e-mail) for 9 months. It was shockingly easy.

You'll be missed Dobbs. Good luck with your work.

Good luck, dobbs. You will be missed.

I'm pretty sure I was already subscribed to your newsletter, but I went ahead and did it again.

Great idea, dobbs, enjoy the break and get some work done. Onward Luddites, to victory!

Good for you, dobbs! I hope it works out. It's something that I should also be considering; maybe this will inspire me!

Good luck, dobbs.

Go for it, dobbs! Changes of scenery and habit are good. That year'll be gone before you know it. Enjoy, and best of luck to you!

while i understand and respect your decision
beware of foolish consistencies and the need for the occasional change of scene and random input from the grind to keep productive and inspired.
add me to the list but i hope to see you again.

Good luck dobbs. I would sign up for your list, but I am trying to spend less time on the Internet playing and more time researching stuff to do with our new house. As you can see by my presence here, my plan is working.

dobbs, you've inspired me to do the same. I'm taking a six month sabbatical from MeFi and MeCha starting today. See y'all in August!
