30 December 2005

My favorite song of 2005 What was yours?
"No Satisfaction," by Black Mountain.
posted by Hugh Janus 30 December | 14:51
there were songs in 2005?
posted by jonmc 30 December | 14:52
I have no idea when new music comes out. I just (with 3 days to spare!!) bought my first 2005 music - the latest White Stripes, the latest New Pornographers. I am so behind.

*turns Glen Miller up loud again*

Glenn, dammit.

"Entertain", by Sleater-Kinney. Or, y'know, just about anything off that album.
posted by bmarkey 30 December | 15:00
"Casimir Pulaski Day", by Sufjan Stevens. Or maybe "The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades is Out To Get Us!".

To be honest, though, I probably missed the best song of 2005 and will stumble over it in a couple years. I'm slow.

Go on, admit it! You all know you secretly love Black eyed peas' "My Humps" (my lovely lady lumps!)
posted by ramix 30 December | 15:02
But my absolute favorite was a duet by Ray Charles/Mary J Blige on his latest posthumous album Genius and Friends called "It all goes by so fast."

Just one song? Jeez!

Gideon, by My Morning Jacket

All These Things That I've Done, by The Killers.

It's got a hook, I tell ya!

I really liked Say It by XTC which has a particularly good sentiment for the season. More or less anything off the Brendan Benson album. A lot of stuff on the Editors album is great too (thanks to slack-a-go-go for the recommendation).

Umm.. I didn't really buy much new stuff this year.

Mine was (is) Sing Me Spanish Techno by New Pornographers. I can send it up when I get home if anyone wants it, but I'm at work right now.

Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone".
posted by eamondaly 30 December | 15:23
iconomy: I was listening to that just a few minutes ago! Whoa...
posted by gaspode 30 December | 15:23
Oh god yeah, The New Pornographers album was pretty good. This year I finally picked up Streethawk by Destroyer AKA The New Porno's Dan Bejar and that is a truly fantastic album. I've no idea what he's singing about but he does good lyric.
posted by dodgygeezer 30 December | 15:24
Here's Sing me Spanish Techno, which is definitely one of my top 15 songs of the 2nd half of the year.
posted by matildaben 30 December | 15:26
And yes, ramix, I love the way the BEP be rockin' it. FRRRRRRRRRRRRRESH!
posted by eamondaly 30 December | 15:38
Kelly, that track sounds pretty good to me.
posted by dodgygeezer 30 December | 15:41
I don't know the song names, but anything off that new Postal Service album is alright by me.
posted by Specklet 30 December | 15:59
I bought some Leonard Cohen.

Oh, released in 2005? feh.
posted by orthogonality 30 December | 16:00
Oh and the last DeVotchKa album, but that was near the end of 2004. I think. But I liked it.
Playing it in the living room is kind of frowned upon chez gaspode though.... If it isn't under 3 minutes long with yelling and heavy on the guitars, it's going to annoy mr g.

Wedding Bells Are Breaking Up That Old Gang Of Mine

Not a new song, but I heard it for the first time in 2005.
posted by warbaby 30 December | 16:06
I hate to tell you this, Speck, but the Postal Service album was released in 2003.
posted by matildaben 30 December | 16:08
Wow, I guess I really am getting old. Old and slow.

"This Year", by the Mountain Goats.

Is it OK to not enjoy new music anymore? I think I got too old, or something.

These

among
mine.

Without a doubt, mine is "The Bleeding Heart Show" by The New Pornographers, though as has been mentioned, that whole album is pretty damn sweet.

I listed my favorite albums of the year here.
posted by BoringPostcards 30 December | 16:56
I don't think it was from this year, but DeVotchka's "How It Ends" was one of my favorite newer finds this year.
posted by Frisbee Girl 30 December | 17:12
i'd like to tell you all i didn't know "since you've been gone" was kelly clarkson until long after i overplayed its many covers.

Katie Melua - Nine Million Bicycles because it is so sweet
posted by Martine 30 December | 17:23
James McMurtry - Can't Make It Here Anymore.

I discovered the Go-Betweens this year. And luckily they released a new album too. I like a bunch of songs on that album. Especially Lavendar and Born to a Family. I also made a song myself out of various odds and ends. It's gotta be my favorite since I made it. But actually, it doesn't make a sound.

Without a doubt, hands down, best of the year.

Oh and I was turned on to Jose Gonzalez (he just cam e up on my iTunes) thanks to MeCha Radio.

Really, my best musical discovery was MetaChat, in general. Y'all are serious rockers of the poo, musically.

I loved "Since U Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson, "Mr. Brightside" by the Killers, "This Fire" by Franz Ferdinand (may have been the end of last year). Favorite guilty pleasure songs: "Hollaback Girl" by Gwen Stefani and "Don't Cha" by the Pussycat Dolls (the lead singer was also in Eden's Crush, the first Popstars group).

Technically came out in 2004, but I only found it in 2005 and it's gotta be the most listened single for the year: Edguy, New Age Messiah. Oh, so cathartic.
