30 December 2005

Finally, I finished Cloud Atlas. Anything we need to do before the 6th? How's it going to work? How many others have, will have or will not have finished reading it by then? I'm looking forward to talking nonsense about books!
I haven't started it. I'm going to read it this weekend.

that was helpful

Wiki Entry for this is here, but we probably need to thrash out any unanswered questions before hand in this thread

It was all backordered and stuff, so I'm just hoping I even get a copy before the 6th. *sighs, curses small town.*

2 sections left.

I'm on page 30? Maybe? I started it, though... that's the biggest hurdle.

I read it last week. Guess I better at least look at the Wiki before I ask the obvious question, eh?

*looks at Wiki*

Uh, how's this going to work?
posted by warbaby 30 December | 15:58
I just added the wiki thing in there so we could, ermm, write stuff in there. I'm in the dark as anyone as to what to do next. I believe we email amberglow about ?stuff?, but after that, I just don't know. Do we do an IRC thing? I don't know.

No one told me to read this. What happens on the sixth?

Did I miss out on joining a cult?

30 pages in, plan on whacking it down to size tomorrow instead of partying.
posted by Lipstick Thespian 30 December | 16:13
Man, you guys haven't even started your book reports yet? 25 pages minimum, due tomorrow! You know this is 30% of your grade, right? If you need any ideas for your diorama let me know.

Finish the book, email amberglow discussion questions. . .maybe if you have finished think up more. . I recall a discussion outcome to not do it on IRC, but I don't have the gumption to look it up.

I read the book without using the cheater's guide. It puzzled me, with the first few change-ups. Eventually, I figured out that it is a Russian Doll type thing.

In the beginning, I said "What the hell?", and put it down for several months. Went back later, and found that it grew on me. I finished the book in about a week, after that, as I can only read at bed-time.

It was quite enjoyable, once I understood the structure of the book.

It's marvelously well-written, this guy's vocab skills are fearsome. I would def read anything else by him. I'm glad we picked this title!
posted by Lipstick Thespian 30 December | 17:36
I'm unfortunately not in the book club, but everytime I see the title of the book you've read, I wonder how much it has to do with Ayn Rand?
posted by panoptican 30 December | 17:52
Ayn Rand? Nothing, this guy is completely at the mercy of his environment, not an objectivist at all.

*dawning moment of comprehension*

Oh, crap. I've been reading The Cloud Atlas by Liam Callanan. I kept wondering, "What is it that people think is so special about this book? It's just the sort of labored exercise one would expect from somebody who teaches writing."

So I just went looking for reviews (being a research analyst, just doing my job, ma'm.) David Mitchell? Who the hell is David Mitchell?

Oh, crap. I can't possibly get a copy before Jan 5 unless...

*makes frantic call to Village Books*

Hot Damn! They've got a used copy and are holding it at the desk for me. It'll be in my hot little hands in two hours.

Sheesh. What are the odds that there are two books out at the same time with such similar titles?

OK, stop laughing you guys.

I liked it; should we defer conversation about it until some Official Thread?

On preview: Dang, warbaby. :)
posted by everichon 30 December | 18:28
sarah, i did the same thing. : >

Everyone: email me any questions or things you definitely want to discuss, or problems you had with it. On the 6th, i'll start a discussion thread with questions and links to some things about it, etc. I've never run a book club before so help me out, k?
posted by amberglow 30 December | 18:47
The 6th? And here I've been rushing to finish it before the 1st.
posted by matildaben 30 December | 18:49
I just got a copy for my birthday. (Along with a shelf's worth of other books. Hooray for birthday presents!) Yay!

Can I be in the book club? Is there some sort of screening process. Do I need to be "jumped in?"
posted by jrossi4r 30 December | 18:51
*jumps jrossi4r*
posted by warbaby 30 December | 18:57
I also would like to get jumped jump in. Is this possible?
posted by Specklet 30 December | 19:02
i was afraid this would be a spoiler thread.
i really want to get a copy as i liked number 9 dream, so i hope i get it in time. i almost never get to talk about books when other people have read them.
posted by ethylene 30 December | 19:26
all of you are in, if you've read it, so get reading! : >
posted by amberglow 30 December | 22:06
In the beginning, I said "What the hell?"

Ditto. It has gotten much better (I am only a little past the halfway point).
