28 December 2005

The world is ending in some strange, prescribed way. You can only have one of the following for the rest of your life: The company of people; the company of animals; music.

Which do you choose?
Books.

As for me, it'd be the animals.
posted by mudpuppie 28 December | 19:25
No, cmonkey. Books are not on the list. Try again.
posted by mudpuppie 28 December | 19:25
You'd probably look at me funny if I started eating the people, so I gotta go with the animals.

I forgot -- the grocery stores are still around. You have plenty of food, water, and books.

So of the three, mental-health-wise....

People. I have this weird vision where I join my wife and in-laws in rural Maine after civilization breaks down. They have a way of making it seem like it's all going to work out.

It would probably end in cannibalism, though.
posted by selfnoise 28 December | 19:27
Oh, well that's entirely different. You'd probably look at me funny if I started ****ing the animals, so I gotta go with the people.
posted by It's Raining Florence Henderson 28 December | 19:28
People. If only so I can train them to make farmyard noises and sing.
posted by seanyboy 28 December | 19:28
How could you do this to me? The three are equally important to me, mental health wise.
posted by matildaben 28 December | 19:29
I've got lots of music stored in my head, and there are about three people in the real world I can tolerate, so it's the animals by a landslide. (Though maybe I could dress Science Girl up in a dog suit...)

posted by bmarkey 28 December | 19:29
Will I be able to choose the people whose company I enjoy? Can it be the members of my favorite bands? No? Then music.
posted by mike9322 28 December | 19:30
selfnoise. I too have a place I'd like to go to when civilisation breaks down. In fact, I was only talking about it this week.
posted by seanyboy 28 December | 19:30
You can make musical instruments out of people and animals when you get tired of them.
posted by trondant 28 December | 19:31
A musically inclined Jake Gyllenhaal. And here's why:

According to the movie Donnie Darko, he's just a bunny in a man suit. So if he played music, I'd have all three bases sounded covered.
posted by Frisbee Girl 28 December | 19:32
People. I can hum.
posted by jonmc 28 December | 19:37
Animals, 'cause not only are they made of tasty meat, but the cute furry ones make good slippers too! Also, humans are out, because I'm not sure that long pig makes good bacon. And life without bacon just ain't worth it.
posted by bonehead 28 December | 19:38
People. There is nothing worse than being lonely.
posted by jrossi4r 28 December | 19:39
Or hungry. For bacon.
posted by bonehead 28 December | 19:48
People. There is nothing worse than being lonely.

See, jrossi, that's my rationale for picking animals. People make me much lonlier than animals do.

Word. And I think that's the first time I've ever used that expression.

Music.

*Kicks everyone who has let down mudpuppie and bmarkey*

*Dispenses fluffy bunnies*

(By the way, I saw an actual mudpuppy today and thought of you.)

Id fight the choice til i die. Fuck the choice.
posted by urbanwhaleshark 28 December | 20:20
Goddamnit, I just don't know. Animals I guess. No, people. shit

i hate this question.

People. That's it, people. but I get to pick who.
posted by Marxchivist 28 December | 20:22
Animals. I love people but I get tired of having them around if I had no animals. I can sing in my head and hum tunelessly.
posted by arse_hat 28 December | 20:28
Thank you, jross4r, but your leg is gonna get tired. I'll definitely take that bunny, though. I will love him and squeeze him and call him George.
posted by bmarkey 28 December | 20:34
If the world is ending then it's probably the people's fault, damn them. I'll take the animals.

(Having lived as a hermit for a couple of years, this is not a hard choice at all. People are mostly embarassing.)
posted by warbaby 28 December | 20:47
(Or a dissapointment.)
posted by warbaby 28 December | 20:56
My first choice would be music, because even though I love animals, they're not all nice and fuzzy-wuzzy and some can kill you. But then I thought, if there are no people around, there's no one to make new music, so I'd be listening to the same old shit for the rest of my life, so maybe animals would be the way to go, just for the variety. Then I thought, there's a fuckload of music in the world already that I haven't even been exposed to yet, probably enough to keep it interesting until I die of old, sexless age.

So, I'm thinking music.

You know, it's funny. When I first read this question my immediate response was "animals". I often say that I like animals more than most people and the thought of living the rest of my life without them pains me. A lot. But when I really thought about it I had to admit that I do need people around me. Someone to talk to. Someone who will be there with me when this strange apocalypse actually happens. So I'm going to have to go with people.

Although if this hypothetical situation were to occur before my dog passes away I might have to answer animals after all, loneliness be damned, 'cause there's no way I'm getting rid of my foofy fluffy butt.

My first thought (sorry, everyone) was music.

Then I realized that I'd probably miss sex.

But then, hell, there's always masturbation, isn't there? It's not the same, but it satisfies in its own way nonetheless.

People, by and large, are dangerous and stupid, and without them, I'd get to do anything I want. Except for killing people, which isn't actually something I want to do.

I guess, in the end, I'm going to have to go with people. It'd be pretty pointless drawing or writing without anyone else around.

I'd miss my cat and my banjo and Jimi Hendrix, though.

People and that includes my cat cos she is a person.
posted by gaspode 28 December | 21:56
Animals crap all over the place, people can't be trusted, so it would have to be music hands down.
posted by dg 28 December | 22:01
We had to put down our cat of eighteen years on Dec. 20.
Bad time to try to answer this question rationally.

I love music. But it doesn't love you back.- I know. Animals don't love you either. But it sure seems like they do.
posted by notreally 28 December | 22:12
notreally, I'm very sorry about your cat. (Really.)

Also, you can't convince me that domesticated animals don't experience love. You just can't.

As far as I know, it's the only truly unconditional kind.
posted by mudpuppie 28 December | 22:17

Haha, gaspode, your answer made me laugh.

As for me.... I'm gonna have to say people (and that includes my dog cos she is a person)
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 28 December | 22:24
people--no question.
posted by amberglow 28 December | 22:27
I just asked my husband this question and he picked music. Way to make me feel good there, mr. rossi.
posted by jrossi4r 28 December | 22:29
mudpuppie, I agree. My cats are sitting on the back of the couch looking at me with half closed eyes and purring gently. If they don't love us back it's a good facsimile.
posted by arse_hat 28 December | 22:32
What a depressing choice to have to make. My life would feel empty no matter what I picked.
posted by goatdog 28 December | 22:35
Easy choice for me: people, even my enemies. Then more people would survive your cataclysm.

I'll say that too. Except my dog is a he. : )
posted by sisterhavana 28 December | 23:56
I'd have to go with people, too. As much as I love my cats, I'd go nuts not having anyone to talk to. (Not to mention have sex with.)

And considering I almost always have a song stuck in my head, I'd still have my soundtrack.
posted by me3dia 29 December | 01:40
Gut reaction: music.
Second thought: people.
Third thought: only the people I like (and many of them play music...yay).
posted by safetyfork 29 December | 07:23
Do I get to choose the people?

Will I remember all the songs I know? You can't take away my ability to whistle, fiend!

By animals, I assume you mean large predatory ones as well, so no.
posted by Hugh Janus 29 December | 09:08
The cast of Cats!

Done!

And a large shotgun for the suicide when the funniness of that jokes edges into hell on earth, exactly five seconds later.

posted by Divine_Wino 29 December | 10:40
Animals, and that includes the mister because he's one, too. :^P
posted by deborah 29 December | 14:38
People. No question. I can make music, and although I really love animals, I've got to have discussions and love and the fascination that is another's mind.

Of course, I'm assuming that I'd be with people like you guys: smart, funny, good lookin'...

"Books." But I'll take music, if you won't let me have my books. There aren't that many real world people I could tolerate surviving the apocalypse with, and I've never been much of an animal person.
posted by ubersturm 29 December | 15:37
this is by far the best thread i've read on here yet.

still pondering, though. And Furryism isn't an option. Hm.

Dunno.
