27 December 2005

Presents Ive seen a thread about what presents you lot got for Christmas; now what did you give?

Me, i bought a hardback copy of Banksy's graffiti work for my mum, some slo mello jazz for my dad (was thinking about some pharoah sanders but went back on that), and some lush latin-jazz party tunes for my sister.

What gives?
I got my mom a DVD player.

I got my little sis a Shuffle and my big bro a Nano.

I got my Dad honeybells (the most delicious citrus ever, which won't come until January, unfortunately.

I knit hats for my little cousins and got them wired on ring pops and nerds.

I got my BFF a craft book, and my roommate West Side Story.

I bought a plane ticket to go and visit my mom in January. I haven't seen her in years, so she'll be happy.

A beautiful lacquer box for my maternal aunt. A coffee table book of flowers for my paternal aunt.

That's it. My family doesn't really celebrate Christmas (except for my aunts, apparently), and all my friends are broke/out of town.

Great idea, I love hearing more what people gave than what they received.

My favorite gift to give this year -- because it came totally out of the blue and satisfied the gift of several friends at once -- was putting down the deposit and first month's rent on a rehearsal space for the band that many of my Cali-based friends have created. I was racking my brains trying to figure out what to give when a sudden financial crisis amongst the lads solved my problem and, ultimately, theirs. Yay!

I gave my wife:
Promethea Volume 1 TPB
Y: The Last Man "Girl on Girl" TPB
A Salad Spinner
A bunch of charcoals and associated supplies
A cute t-shirt
A bag for the camera I knew she was getting

Oh, and I made her a mix-CD.

I gave my dad a book called Popular Music From Vittula, by Mikael Niemi. Divine_Wino gave me a copy of it, and it's the best book of the year (so maybe I should put this in that other thread, too).

I loaned the copy Divine_Wino gave me to a friend, then bought two copies for gifts.

So great. So, so great.

For my husband, a coat.

For my MIL, a book on tulips, some plants, a puzzle, a giant microbe (she's a microbiologist), a bunch of other small things.

For my FIL a dvd recorder.

For my SIL, an etching, some mixing bowls, some bath products

For my BIL, steaks and marinades and grilling utensils (he got a new grill)

My friends got various things, bookmarks I had made, books, Ed Wood dvd collection, simpsons dvds, etc.

My mother is having xmas when we visit in February, so I don't have to worry about any of my family's gifts until then.

Ex-boyfriend: A plus Mechazawa
Female Roommate: FRUITS BASKET vol. 12, soap from Lush
Friend with Broken Leg: Pre-ordered DUNE enhanced DVD(the one with Sting in it)
Parents and Sister's Family: Amazon.com gift certificates

What can I say? I'm poor.

Wolfdaddy, that's a brilliant gift. Do the band have anything out that we can listen to?

The same goes for cmonkey. Thanks to the xmas vibe on here, and thanks to some particularly, i got the xmas vibe in spades before i left for my parent's place, lost it, got it back again. Seeing my mum and dad, even only for a couple of days, was a wonderful thing. I hope your journey next year is a good one.

er, that's "plush Mechazawa"

I got my sweetie two of the FX 'replica' lightsabers -- one Luke Skywalker (green) and one Darth Vader (red). (After all, what fun is only one lightsaber??)

We (four adult couples) open our presents for our "chosen family" christmas late on Christmas Eve (starting 1030 pm or so). At midnight, he and the other three boys ran outside to play lightsabers in the middle of the street, while it was softly snowing.

It was cool.

I sent a friend 7 million nematodes.

The brother - books: The Daily Drucker, Access 2003 Inside and Out, Access Developer's Handbook Set, Building Microsoft Access Applications, seven or eight different Arkansas Razorback shot glasses.

Mom - Beautiful perfume/powder set from Dillards, some big special Christmas makeup kit that I get her every year at Dillards, two crystal lotus candle holders, a couple of apple-themed plaques for her kitchen (she collects apple stuff for the kitchen), and a 7 inch gold rope bracelet.

Stepfather - a set of four DVDs with 20 John Wayne movies on them, some sort of fancy wrench that is supposedly really good for gripping rusted/worn nuts and that sort of thing. And I am partially paying for a big laser level/transit thing that my brother and I bought him.

I also got a some gifts for a couple of friends and I haven't sent them yet. I am pathetically bad about mailing things. I'll refrain from saying what I got since people might possibly know I post here and read it.

can't say yet because some Mechatters haven't gotten their gifties yet from me, so lips(ticks) are sealed until they see me again.

hugh,
Can I just say how happy I am that you liked it and gave it as a gift?

Yes!
posted by Divine_Wino 27 December | 16:23
Th' wife got DVDs: series 3 of the Fast Show, the complete Spaced, and two more that stupid Amazon UK haven't sent yet (all of these are sorta for both of us). She also got four pair of fleece socks from L L Bean.

Mom and Dad got a bunch of stuff from Zingermans, hand delivered by their everloving son.

Sis and BIL got a Harry and David smorgousbox. Impersonal, but delicious!

Gave 2 mp3 players, diamond earrings, some mules, a digital camera, some baby clothes and supplies, 2 bottles of alcohol, some books.

posted by ramix 27 December | 16:50
I gave my Mom Tiffany sterling silver earrings. She liked them a lot.

It was sort of a bad year for giving- none of us gave very exciting presents (we've all agreed). Christmas sort of snuck up on us- we hope that next year will be more exciting.

I gave my mom an iron, a bottle of wine, a book on management called Fish!, a DVD called How's Your News?, metal measuring cups, and toothpaste. I gave my uncles some hand-made ink drawings of fish [we go fishing in Canada every summer].
posted by sciurus 27 December | 17:22
Cool thread idea! I sent my Dad some yummy fresh crunchy peanuts, to my sisters I sent the softest socks in the world. I also gave my sweetie a pair of the softest socks in the world, a martini magnet for her mini fridge at work, a silly notepad, 2 sweaters, and a 2006 calendar with pictures of Tuscany, which she loves and would like to see some day.

Hubby got books, socks, underwear, and a box of chocolate covered cherries (that last one is tradition. He gets it every year.)

Daughter got a kareoke machine, a cd and a fancy calendar of Ireland. Other daughter got an Mp3 player, and cds. Son got two dvds-Napoleon Dynamite and one with all of Weird Al Yankovic's music videos. Plus a watch. (His sisters gave him a Vote for Pedro shirt.)

I gave my "brother in law" (really just my sister's longtime boyfriend) both volumes of "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen", and he detached himself from the Christmas celebrations for a couple of hours and read them both.

I gave my mom, dad, and sister a Qoop book of this.

I gave my girlfriend the drawings themselves; they were an integral part of our getting together. We hooked up after I gave her a watercolor lesson, where I drew this.

I also gave her the "Up Series" and a bottle of Benedictine.

I always give books. Several Jared Diamonds this year.

My son got a record player, which is very cool & chrome & also plays CDs; Steal This Book - thanks in large part to Divine_Wino & Loquacious and he's read half of it already and says it rocks; several T-shirts I put Devo & Dali & Che & Escher transfers on, candy, an incredible growing mafioso, and Patti Smith, the Bad Brains, the Stones, the Dropkick Murphys and the Ramones.

My daughter got the Men of the Westville Pub calendar; underwear I stenciled with pictures of otters; a gym membership; a very cool travel mug, a book of essays, a scarf & hat & fingerless gloves with mitten flip overs, zebra striped pajamas and a black lace skirt.

I knitted my brother a Dr. Who scarf & got my mother a copy of Freakonomics and a flattened wine bottle turned cheese tray.

Did I mention my gnome pajamas that my kids got me! Gnome pajamas! Gnome pajamas!

The Rossi Girls chipped in and bought mom and dad a dishwasher.

The nieces and nephews got mesh beach bags with pool toys and big towels with their names embroidered on them. (Not the most exciting gift ever, but when the rest of the toy orgy is discarded, my gift will still be getting used.)

I bought the hubby lots of nice clothes. (He's a very, very freakishly big dude, so clothes that fit take a lot of hunting.) and a new car kit for his XM.

MGL--Let's go out on the town in our matching gnome pajamas!!! (I also got the sock monkey ones, but the gnomes rock just a bit harder.)
posted by jrossi4r 27 December | 20:10
I am dying - dying, I say - to go out in my gnome pajamas. I showed them to my brother tonight at the laundromat & he looked at me and said, "Okay, now I see why you don't date anyone."
posted by mygothlaundry 27 December | 20:15
I gave my wife a new drum kit, it's pretty sweet. The only other thing I gave away was to invite my future bro-in-law to help himself to any of my books; he took a tattered copy of 'Siddartha'. I don't know what that means.

(And you look both stylin' and sexy in that picture. Any guy that doesn't think so wouldn't be worth dating anyway.)

Can I come to the slumber party? I have sock monkeys and I had snowglobes already. I don't have the garden gnomes, though....

For the extended families on both sides we made charitable donations. For ourselves we've yet to exchange gifts, and we set a $50 dollar limit on each other. I rounded down and managed to get the grubstake a used cd of piano music as well as a used hip hop cd, some fancy magnets, a much needed accessory for the nano, and the recent Satrapi work in hardcover.

I'm hoping for some Paul Frank PJs myself, but I'm afraid they're prohibitively expensive in regard to the imposed cost limit.

I admit I also got myself books 1 & 2 of Alan Moore's Top Ten and a couple of used cds as well.

Man, I've been asking for months for flannel pyjamas! I don't have a thing to wear to the MeCha slumber party!

Uh, I actually typed that all the way out before I realized what I was saying.

I'm broke this year, so I printed a bunch of photos I'd taken, matted them, and pretended to be an artiste. They turned out quite well and the family loved them, so there.
