Help. I Need to Install Some RAM Walk me through this, please, oh technically gifted mechazens? [More:] My computer is 2 years old, a friend custom built it, with a M7VIT Pro motherboard; manual for which is on my lap. I bought 128 MB Kingston value RAM for systems that use Jedec (generic) memory - is it going to work? The side of my computer case hasn't been on since last summer (keeps it cooler,) so I can see the slots and all, but which one is the right one? I've looked at a bunch of websites & printed out this one and I should be able to do this without frying myself and my computer, right?
Those instructions are right. Be careful with what components you touch, just to be safe, but it's really not a huge procedure.

Do I have to go get one of those anti static wristband things or can I just do this? And how do I tell if this is the right kind of RAM?

Presumably you'll just want to use whatever slot is free... generally the slot immediately below the one that's populated to avoid any MB weirdness.

Your memory should be a 184-pin DIMM. As long as that's right, you should be okay. If the machine doesn't boot, you should just be able to turn it off and take out the RAM. I'm not really sure what Jedec is, so I can't help you there.

Wear a static thing if you like, but I never have. Just don't do the operation on carpet, and touch something metal (like the screw on a light switch) before you start. Or, at least that's what I do. May just be superstition, though.

You have a DIMM, not a SIMM, so follow those set of instructions. Be aware that the RAM has to really be "in" there, with the levers clicked back into position, and you may have to push a little.

Don't touch anything on the MB you don't have to.

If the machine doesn't post when you boot it again, take out the RAM.

Good luck. :)

You can just leave the power supply plugged in (but computer off) when you touch the case for a cheap 'n easy grounding.

What's the RAM's serial number/product number/identifying goggleable detail?

And yeah, the levers on the side will click down fully when you push on it to seat it correctly.

It says KVR133Q/128R than under that it says 128 MB PC133 CL3 168-Pin DIMM

and it was assembled in USA, I guess I should be proud. ;-)

Oh, that won't work. You need a 184 pin DIMM.

Drat. I'm glad I checked in here before turning everything off and trying to jam it in. Okay. So I need to go back to the store and get what - 184 pin DIMM? Anything else I need to know?

these are the types you should buy. Write down the specs from whatever's in your price range, and ask an employee for something that'll fit.

Oh, and the higher the PC number, the faster the RAM is. You may or may not notice improvement with PC3200 as opposed to PC2100.

Thank you!!! This is great.

You're welcome :)

The other thing is that (once you get the right pin number), you're going to have to push it down harder than you think to get it to snap in. You'll probably feel a bit paranoid about pushing it that hard, but then it'll settle and everything'll be alright. This sounds kind of like anal sex but I would not recommend lube in this case.

Or you'll push too hard and your hand will slip and snap a capacitor off in a production server at 1 in the morning, like I did a few years ago. That didn't end well.
