I'm surprised the "questions" page didn't mention how the guy BURNT DOWN A BUILDING accidentally because he didn't know how to use flash powder correctly.
Also, many of the non-staged pictures were taken with the 'sneak in, snap a picture, and run like hell' method, with no permission granted from the subjects.

I had to read this book this semester for class; it was an important book any way you cut it. Anyobdy who thinks the guy was a saint didn't read the damn thing though.

No, Riis was no saint, but he did do a lot of good and those pictures are important even now, in a lot ways.

Also, a buddy of mine grew up in the project named after him.

Great stuff, arse_hat. The book and questions links really make it good. Though I had seen the street arabs' sleeping quarters pic, I had never thought about its obvious fakery. This is really interesting.

I like the pic of the girl she have on a long dres and it up her lodging in the women quarters above the station.

"Street Arabs and Growler Gangs". Wow.
I love how the Bandit pic makes the clothesline look like it's actually being made out of the air above it.

Wow. "Mulberry Bend," indeed. Striking, arse_hat. A profound impact and something like deja vu, for me. Happy Holidays and thanks.
