Car Insurance Question Since I no longer have a car, I have no insurance. I am renting a car for the week to drive to see my family in TN. What kind of insurance do I want to get to cover my ass?
IBS Insurance.

Well, that would be nice. For real.

Are you renting it in the state of New York? When I rented a car here to drive to Texas, the cost of the car covered basic insurance (it has to, by NY law). That's why it costs more to rent cars here. You can pay to get the extra insurance, but it is not necessary, from what the rental place told me (Enterprise, if that matters).

Are you from TN originally? I spent a few years in East TN (Knoxville & Johnson City) and really loved it.

Your credit card should offer a bit of protection, too, I think.

If you don't get the info you need here and want me to post on AskMe for you, just let me know.

Thanks, jrossi4r. I'm actually renting for Newark because I needed a SUV to keep the dogs separate and have room for three people.

My parents are building a home in Butler, TN (about 45 minutes out of Johnson City from my understanding). I have never been there before but I am looking forward to it. It will be a big difference from Harlem.

I'm wondering what additional insurance I need, if any. What my credit card would actually cover. What is necessary by law. All of that...

"That required coverage consists of the same minimum levels of liability insurance which all vehicle owners in New York must have: $25,000 of bodily injury liability protection if one person is injured in an accident, $50,000 if there is more than one person injured; $50,000 if there is one death from an accident, $100,000 if there is more than one death; plus $10,000 of property damage liability protection. For many renters who have modest amounts of assets, the minimum coverage the car rental companies must provide as a part of the rental may be enough to protect them from lawsuits by victims of accidents involving the rental car."
