HEY! is it bad form to put 'let it be' on a mix cd?
[More:]
here's what i'm working with right now. needs more piano+accordian.

beatles - you never give me your money
paul simon - cool, cool river
tift merritt - virginia, no one can warn you,
tom waits - cold water
tom waits - rain dogs
beatles - let it be
beatles - carry that weight
barenaked ladies - brian wilson (live) [what the fuck? -ed]
tom waits - who are you (warsawaza)
clash - straight to hell
tom waits - telephone call from istanbul
beachwood sparks - ballad of never rider
david bowie - life on mars?
holy roman empire - maria
coldplay - the scientist [again, wtf and shit?]
tom waits - strange weather (live)
tom waits - cold, cold ground (live)
rufus wainwright - hallelujah
tom waits - come on up to the house
tom waits - falling down
beck - a day in the life
coldplay - green eyes [wtf blah blah]

i've got some placeholders in there now. help! feeling maudlin. exams this week. feel like life is a television drama aimed at teenage girls. want piano + accordian.
Accordians make everything better. Seems you don't mid doubling up on artists, so how 'bout Complainte De La Butte - Rufus Wainwright?

rw is just because cohen can't sing and i don't like buckley. i dunno.

IMO, unless it's oriented towards one or two artists, it's bad form to have an artist represented more than once.

And it's almost always bad form to include the Beatles. (IMO, and no disparagement towards the Beatles.) Unless it's "Happiness is a Warm Gun", because that song is the best!

On preview, John Cale's cover of Hallelujah's good.

"MO, unless it's oriented towards one or two artists, it's bad form to have an artist represented more than once."

yeah i know this rule. i think it's a dumb rule. i used to dj for a radio station, and i basically tried not to repeat artists within a four month period. sure, you can do it, but if there's a better segue back to the same artist, why bother?

i need to check the cale. dobbs, have you heard his original? it's pretty rough.

this is all the product of sitting at la tazza fresca everynight studying for two weeks. they always play the same damn stuff.

The Cale cover is fabulous. Also, I think Let It Be is fine on a mix. When I first read the question, I determined that if it was the last song on the mix, that would be no good. That seems a major copout. About the accordions, see ILM.

Yer outta your tree. A few weeks ago I was at a party thrown by MeFite Al_Truist and a mix was on and my ears started hurtin'. I said, "Who the fuck is slaughtering Coen?" The answer was Rufus Wainright.

Then again, you'd have to put a gun to my head to get me to put the Beatles on a mix tape. Different strokes, I guess.

You want piano? How about Parker Paul's Lemongrass or Hayden's I'm to Blame. Accordian? Decemberists' Mariner's Revenge Song.

Only the Hayden will fit your mix, though. Ties in nice with the Waits.

A good source for accordions is Alec K. Redfearn & the Eyesores.

Another (probable, not sure) decent source for accordions, and nicely Waitsian, is the Dead Brothers.

Oh, and Richard Thompson. Can't think offhand what particular songs are best. "Don't Sit on My Jimmy Shands" has one, but wouldn't really fit.

Pauline Oliveros, also probably not a fit.

Pauline Oliveros

Her Deep Listening album is a favorite of mine, especially for writin' or mattressin'.

And it's Paulene, with an E, not an I. *ducks*

If you just want a doomy, maudlin, accordion-like sound, Nico's harmonium playing on The End and Desertshore will stand you in good stead.

Nimal and Bratko Bibic's solo band the Madleys made extensive use of accordion. Nimal's "Au Zoo" or Bibic's "Sackamra"?

Guy Klucevsek's accordion cover of Bacharach's "One Less Bell to Answer" is top drawer.

Really? Allmusic thinks otherwise, as does this page.

Allmusic thinks otherwise

Wow. I stand corrected.

I have four of her albums ripped to my HD and all the tags have the E in her name even though they're different labels. But I just checked the cover of Deep Listening and indeed, it's an I. Sorry 'bout that.

I could never throw "Let It Be" on a mix just because it's too damn long. I usually can get about 25 songs a mix thanks to my love of short punchy songs. And now I struggle every time I want to throw a 5:00+ minute song on mix.

And in my mix world the doubling of artists is just plain wrong unless it's a single artist best-of mix. I have a structure most of my mixes start with and then I play around with the parameters as I go along, but the two songs rule seems to never be broken.

Not sure about the Mecha philosophy on the self-link, but my band has two tracks with accordion up on our website.

The first rule is that if you're making a mix for yourself, you should put whatever you want on it. Don't worry about rules or being uncool.

The second rule is YOU'RE DOING IT ALL WRONG!

And c'mon, meloncholy squeezebox? 16 Horsepower anyone? Jeez.
(Oh, and Cale's version is the best. Anything else I can settle definitively with my presentation of opinion as fact? Maybe you prefer strawberry ice cream? No, the best flavor is Rocky Road and you're DOING IT ALL WRONG! Which will be the title of my new reality show.)

Also, any time you're thinking about "Let it Be," toss in LSD for Africa instead.
posted by klangklangston 15 December | 12:59
16 Horsepower is waaay overrated, and a squeezebox isn't the same thing as an accordion.
posted by kenko 15 December | 13:55
Overrated? Bunk! Folklore was one of the best albums of 2004, hands down. And they use a variety of pump organs, thankyaverymuch.
