What's your pleasure? This morning I was talking about the things I enjoy and it made me want to know about yours. Little pleasures, big pleasures, whatever you will.
Listening to music, especially loud, manic music. Drinking beer. Having good conversations. Looking at pretty girls. Meeting interesting people and hearing their stories. Smoking. A good cheesesteak. A good cheesecake. Ballgames on the radio. Good books, especially funny ones. Walking around New York City.

Dreams about finding and reading books by Jack Vance that don't exist.

My girlfriend. Red wine. Black tea. Having the heat on and a window cracked during the winter, to simulate spring.

Making my parents laugh. Coming up with a good chiasmus or pun. Imitating Cat Stevens and Columbo. Playing the banjo along with the Who.

My cat opening drawers with the knobs, and sitting in a basket. Cicadas. Really, there's too much to list.

Driving with my sister the other day past a man walking a dog, she turned to me and said, "I just love nipples on dogs. Aren't they hilarious?"

So I will post here on her behalf: "Dog nipples."

Patting my dogs any time I want to, because I can. Scaring the cats, because I can. Beer. Garlic. Making the house smell like cookies or pumpkin pie. The turkey cheddar quiche that is frozen in the fridge for the middle of the week when we whine about what to have for dinner. Listening to birds and bugs. Thinking in the shower. Coming up with ideas. Meeting smart people with cool life stories. Flannel sheets. About 3 brazillion other things.

Baths at night and clean sheets on the bed. Fresh cut flowers. Soup simmering on the stovetop. Red wine in front of a fire. My friends.

Alligators. Dragonflies. Turtles. Vultures. Raccoons. Frogs. Lizards. Hawks. Driving down I-75 and seeing wild pigs frolicking off the side of the road. Going out with my friends in their powerboat and seeing dolphins chasing our wake. Basically all the wildlife I see every day.

Yesterday, 'pup came into the city and we walked around my neighborhood, had killer garlic noodles (that will ensure that I, at least, won't get kissed until some time in 2006) at a Vietnamese place down the street and then sat in the Irish pub on the corner watching the 'wildlife' pass by the window and a bowling tournament replete with the worst hair styles for men circa 1987. I laughed so hard it hurt a couple times, I didn't think about anything but the immediate present for several hours.

It struck me that I've always got 80 things on my list, I've got a plan and an itinerary, I'm always a day late and a dollar short on some sort of self-imposed deadline that no one but me gives a random shit about, but that I'm inexplicably and passionately committed to. That I go until I drop and hit the ground running as soon as I've rested enough to get back up, or before, for that matter.

It's not a complaint nor is it something that makes me unhappy: the work hard/play hard lifestyle has its merits & benefits & it brings me great satisfaction, but I think I've forgotten what it's like to relax. Relaxing is good.

Laughing with friends over a cigarette and a beer (or coffee). Cuddling and falling asleep with someone, then waking up alone and refreshed. Karaoke night, staying up too late with a good book, watching movies in the theater, being the undisputed champ of Irish car bombs. Hummus, sauvingnon blanc, tortilla soup, cheese, baguettes. Bullshitting with old friends, meeting new people, flirting, uncontrollable laughter. Taking pictures, playing guitar, the sound of rain, swimming. Quilts, boys with red hair, being crafty.

cmonkey--That happens so often, it doesn't even move me anymore.

I weep for you, jrossi4r, if you can no longer take pleasure in the tears of elderly men cradling kittens :(

Cuddling in the morning with my dog, when she's extra warm from sleeping under the covers all night. Having a lot of lip glosses in my purse. Having perfectly pedicured feet. Flirting with cute boys.
