Gottgedammt I can't seem to find it... It being a website that had an unreleased prog album with drummer Tony Williams up on it.
The site was Scandinavian, though which of the Nordic lands, I couldn't tell you. It also had Pink Floyd live sets on it.
I could have sworn that it was linked through here, MoFi or MeFi, but I can't find the damned thing. It might have also come from Regnyouth.blogspot.com, but their search function blows... ARG!
(Anyone know what I'm talking about?)
I NEED MORE PROG IN MY LIFE SO AS TO MAKE MY NETHACK SESSIONS MORE AUTHENTIC!
(I am a nert).
nert?

why am I picturing a restyn-infused breathmint with glasses?

(In my group of real life friends, "nerds" is said "nertz!" in a Colonel Klink voice).

and I'm a big nert, too. I just reordered my iTunes playlist by title and realized that I have 10(!) versions of "If I Were A Carpenter."

I need help.

What's with all this prog talk I've been hearing?

Do you guys mean "prog rock" as in Can and Neu! and 15 minute minimalist techno-like tracks?
posted by loquacious 10 December | 14:47
"Prog," is a weird genre.

To some it means stuff like Rush, Genesis, ELP, King Crimson, Yes. To others stuff like Hawkwind, Amon Duul, Can etc. There's gems in both groups.
posted by jonmc 10 December | 14:49
Guh. Hawkwind? Ok, Genesis, fine.

Maybe it's meant to be Prague-rock instead of prog-rock!? :)

*puts on Neu!'s Negativland and rocks out*

Listen to "Silver Machine," or "Kings Of Speed," el loquo. That's some badass rock and roll.

Plus Hawkwind gave us the diety who walks among us as a man...

and for the record, I hate ELP and Yes. Genesis had some gems ("The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway," "Abacab," "Man On The Corner") but that was due to the tension between Rutherford and Banks' fierce chops and Gabriel and Collins pop smarts and R&B fandom. Rush have done some phenomenal stuff, and I give them integrity props for not changing with the times over 30 years, they're still as geek/burnout as ever. King Crimson has some stuff that blows me away, too. The German stuff like Can & Amon Duul that I've heard is fucking great, too.

I really, really like the more minimalist proto-techno stuff from Can and Neu!. Drone-ish, almost. Godspeed You! Black Emperor touches on this occasionally.

Silver Apples nails it, but not very hard. Silver Apples is basically acid house 20+ years before the fact, and the fact that it was just 3 guys, a drummer, a bassist and an oscillator tweaker just makes it more awesome.

Mind, it's not a perspective of "Ooo, it sounds like techno, cool!", I've just always been attracted to that pulsing wall of sound style, even from before discovering techno. It makes my eyes go funny when I listen to it. I like that.

MAGMA. Now that's some fine prog.

I like the Silver Apples, too, dude. Their cover of "Mustang Sally," is a favorite, for obvious reasons. But i do urge you to re-listen to Hawkind. Yeah, they were really into that whole spacey sci-fi thing, but when the mood struck them, they could rock out with a vengeance. And they had a hot naked chick (NSFW. duh) dancing on stage with them. What's not to like?

I've just always been attracted to that pulsing wall of sound style,

I guess that where we diverge (not that there's anything wrong with that). I need the old-school rock dynamics and fireworks, which is why some electronic music appeals and some dosen't. But vive la differance my friend.

To prove it, I'm uploading a Magma song. Since it's 40+-minutes long, it'll take a while, though.

To some it means stuff like Rush, Genesis, ELP, King Crimson, Yes. To others stuff like Hawkwind, Amon Duul, Can etc. There's gems in both groups.

There's actually about a zillion other distinct sub-groups, not even small marginal ones, though it's true that those are the most widely known.

Well, to me, the whole idea of "progressive rock," is an intense balancing act. If you get too carried away with the the noodling around and artistic conciets, you stop being rock and roll*, but if you get the mix between exploration and respect for roots just right, then the results can be incredible.

*and inevitably, a rebellion occurs. The rise of stuff like the Stooges and the Dictators was at least in part a reaction against the progressive rock of their times to bring rock back down to street-level. Whatever you think of the results, the rebellion was necessary.

i like what little coheed and cambria i've heard so far. if i stumble on some old prog as i clean my music files, i'll post, unless you know what you want already.

For loquacious (and who ever else wants it):

Hawkwind - Kings Of Speed

posted by jonmc 10 December | 16:18
Pink Floyd live sets available from BigOMagazine were posted here in October but that's from Singapore and most people's definition of "Scandinavian" omit Singapore. Tony Williams is mentioned in the archives but I don't see anything current.

if floyd works i know i have an astronomy dominine somewhere, if it's wanted

jonmc: Are we talking about the same Silver Apples? I don't think I've heard that cover.

That Hawkwind track is alright - jammy and even a little psychedelic-y bluegrass. A bit too loose and sloppy for me though, and the philosophy/mythos would just drive me up the wall. Needs more cowbell.
posted by loquacious 10 December | 16:47
Magma - Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh, live, from the Trilogie au Trianon triple album! Bzipped tarball.

Whatever you think of the results, the rebellion was necessary.

Yeah, that's why Johnny Rotten hated Van der Graaf Generator, Henry Cow got no sympathy from London punks, and Robert Fripp and Joe Strummer didn't do a joint interview for Melody Maker in which they expressed a lot of admiration for each others' music.
posted by kenko 10 December | 16:48
kenko: I'm not saying that there were no points of intersection between proggers and punks, merely that when the rock scene as a whole gets too wankery/prtentious there's going to be a necessary three-chord loud/fast/dirty rebellion just as a musical enema. Dosen't mean I disavow either side of the equation, it's a symbiotic thing. After a 15-minute space jam, a 3 minute 3-chord song about fucking can be quite refreshing, dig?

for el loquo, yet again:

Mustang Sally - Silver Apples

(I guess it was their way of saying "we're still just rock and rollers, too")

Silver Apples was just two guys: Simeon and the drummer. And Simeon was nuts.

Thanks for the help (and songs) guys. Big O magazine was a site I visited on the same day that I found the other site (which is Scandinavian, I swear), so I think there's some connection... I've just gotta find it...

Hell yeah! MAGMA!

I was just listening to Köhntark Part Two this morning, which I dug out of iTunes just because of this thread...
