I want to buy this coffee table... but the chrome's a little damaged. Advice? [More:]So I'm considering purchasing this coffee table but as you can see, some of the chrome has chipped. What can be done about this? Also, will the chrome continue to flake and peel on its own or must it be abused to suffer further? (ie, if that area of the table isn't touched will the damage remain the same or get worse on its own?)

The table is approx 30 years old if that makes any difference.
I have no advice, but that table is awesome!

You can have it rechromed, but it'll cost you. Find a furniture restorer who specializes in metallurgy, as opposed to the local car/bike shops. You could also inquire with any welders, or interior design specialists.

Thanks, matildaben. More pictures here.

Smart Dalek, any idea what that kind of thing costs? I haven't purchased the table yet and it's not even in the same province as I so I can't take it and get a quote, but a ballpark figure may help me decide whether the purchase would be worthwhile.

It can greatly vary, depending on who does it. In any case, the table would have to be re-prepped, meaning dismantling, sandblasting, application of a powdercoat, and finally being dipped into a vat of molten metal. This final part is key - anyone who tells you the table can be touched up with reflective hobby paint is seriously mistaken. The replating is an immersion precess, unlike electroplating, which is generally suited for fine detailling of small items, like flatware.

Looking at the photos again, it's possible that only part of the table may need refinishing. But the turnaround time would likely be close to a week, maybe a little longer, depending who did it.

If the price is right then if it was me, I'd prolly think about doing a bangup spray paint bodge and consider having some material overhanging. It's 2nd shelf (great table by the way) so I would personally think it's an easier thing to get away with.

I would buy it for the wallpaper mag - excellent publication.

As a 2nd thought, what's to stop you looking up some local place (shit, not sure what type of business even - oh ok, smartdalek is more in the know) and sending them the photos and asking them for a rechrome quote?

Damn, dobbs, between those chairs you bought recently and this great table you're thinking of buying, I want to see some pics of your home. I love your taste in furniture.

I was going to tell you to touch it up with reflective hobby paint, but I bow to the greater expertise of Smart Dalek. However, you can buy chrome spray paint at the hardware store and you can spray paint stuff, for example lawn furniture or toolboxes, with it and it will be remarkably shiny.

Mygoth - the best material for lawn furniture and toolboxes would be "stove paint", the high-heat version of the reflective paint. The trouble with it is the color match may not always be precise, can cloud up age, sometimes damaging the chromework underneath, and on occasion, can rub off onto clothing, skin, etc. And that's not even including the nightmare of picking out and lint in the air which may settle on the sheen surface while drying! Having touched up an old motorcycle with the stuff, I'd recommend the self-spray method only if dobbs wanted to use the table as a standalone sculpture, end even then, by painting the entire table. For something which may become a personal heirloom, the vat wins over the can.

I should also add that the molten state of chrome is (somewhat) similar to heated solder, which helps explain how it can bead up and pucker with age, as well as its tendency to change colors when oxidizing. I don't think dobbs'll have to worry about "blue pipe syndrome, as this isn't for a patio setting.

Hmm. Thanks for all the comments. I'm gonna see if I can swing getting the table and then deal with it then. (Thanks, Dalek! You're smart.)

boringpostcards, thanks for the compliments. I like my taste, too, but it's only recently started developing! I don't have any pics or, at the moment, a camera that works. However, overall my place is not super impressive as I only started tarting it up about 6 months ago and am doing it (slowly) one room at a time. Living room is almost done. It's about 17' x 14', not counting the bay windows. The room is painted red with white ceiling and trim.

One wall has this sofa (not my apt. in pictures) on it with this painting above it. Another has two of these lounge chairs (third picture) in red. In January I am getting a couch to match those chairs (same seller) and it will go on the opposite wall to the yellow couch and have this painting above it. (Can you tell I like Dana Boettger's paintings? I also own this one (which hangs above my bed), one other not on her site, and I am getting two more in January, also not yet on her site. Been kicking myself for a decade for missing out on this one.)

Third wall has an autographed and framed original of this poster (autographed by artist Andrzej Pagowski, not the filmmakers). Last wall is all windows and plants. I also have two early paintings by Matt Sesow which unfortunately aren't on his site and which I seem to keep moving in and out of the room as I can't make up my mind if they fit or not.

Room has hardwood floors and am currently trying to get a good rug and a coffee table. (I don't like the ones I have right now.)

Next room to mess with will be my tv room (which is technically a bedroom), then my bedroom.

Also, I don't own the place, I just rent. So though it's "home," I never call it that. It's a two bedroom floor of a house, about 1100 sf. Lived her 12 years now. Hopefully will get my own place soon!
