AskMeCha-Computer Banking Security Question [More:]If I plug my Apple powerbook into the ethernet plug on my wall at work I am connected to the network. I know they monitor computer use at work (which is not something I worry about). If I connect to my bank site can the admins read my passcode, etc.?
Not if the bank's site is using encryption. I'd imagine any real bank would. If you're using firefox, the address box turns yellow when your session is encrypted.

If it's a work PC they might have a keystroke logger or similar logging software.

Thanks, no, it's my own computer, that I'm plugging into their network.

If you want secure comunication from anyone's network you can enable remote desktop on your win2k, 2003 or xp home machine. Then you can connect to your home desktop from your laptop. The conection is secure, 56 or 128 bit RSA and all your communication with banks or any other sites runs from your home machine. Anyone watching on the host network sees only an encrypted link to your home. I do all my remote work this way.
