29 November 2005

An exercise in viral marketing How many band names can you see? Apparently there are 75.
This is good

Fun! Thanks, CE.

Why is calendar from August 2006? (Yes, I see the bandname on it, but what am I missing with the month?)

I'm at 34. What's hard is that I can recognize things that are meant to symbolize band names, but have no idea what they'd be.

Some of them are funnier if you take them at face value. I think Dildo Guns is a much better name than Sex Pistols. :)

Doh!

I gave up at 45 and there were a few I wasn't certain that I had came up with the right conclusions since they seemed less obvious than a great deal of the others.

Thanks for posting this. I saw this ad the recent issue of Relix. Reminds me of the old "100 Grateful Dead Songs" poster (color your own!) that first popped up in the mid-80s. I haven't counted which songs yet. Is anyone actually writing/typing them? Uploading?

Um, I just checked the print version and it is larger than the one in the link. Whole bunch of stuff on the left of the picture not showing in this scan. The right side is accurate though. My copy has staples down the middle and my scanners not available, so I'm no help.
posted by terrapin 29 November | 15:17
Ah, well, they are probably peripheral bands.
posted by Cryptical Envelopment 29 November | 15:28
Good one, Cryptical.

I found 46 (including a few peripherals) just now. I made note of 17 other things that I assume are clues but that I couldn't decipher immediately. That will help me describe which ones I don't get when I ask my wife for help later.

Thanks again for posting this. I'll check back later.

And I thought I was doing well getting Black Flag and Whitesnake. :-(

With the wife's help we are up to 55.

At 63 and not making much progress. Anyone else bothering? Where are jonmc and klang? ;)
posted by terrapin 29 November | 20:15
I quit trying when I found out it was incomplete. I want a complete scan, dammit!

ah, there is a game (with the complete image)

Only available for US people. So USians, let's work together (cheat) and maybe one of us will win. =P

dano: I think the August calendar is wrong. I think base don what band is in the calendar that it should be April.
posted by terrapin 29 November | 20:51
Well, I disagree with some of the ones in the annotated page. For example, I think where they have The Cult, I think Manic Street Preachers. I also think the kissing chicks is The Queers and not Kiss. For the 2 they didn't guess I had Bikini Kill and Bush. I also used the sledgehammer in Smashing Pumpkins for Tool. I am not sure I agree with Twisted Sister, but I don't have another answer for it unless there is a band called The Acrobats that I am not familiar with. My total is 74 though finally. The one I diddn't even think of that I saw on the annotated page was Pavement.

Plus, there is a band called The Subways.

This is a virgin ad - nothing even remotely out of the mainstream eye is going to be on there. Besides, the script that tells you how many answers are right verifies all of the ones on the list. Tool was one of the ones I guessed but the script doesn't say it is an answer. *shrugs*
posted by weretable and the undead chairs 29 November | 21:17
My guesses. Anyone is welcome to use them for submitting an entry if they wish.

On Preview: I never went to the offical site, so I guess I shouldn't question them. And maybe folks shouldn't use my answers then :-)
posted by terrapin 29 November | 21:19
I submitted my answers anyways and got only 61. *shrug*
posted by terrapin 29 November | 21:38
Holy crap! Well done!
posted by Cryptical Envelopment 29 November | 22:58
I entered the guesses (all verified by the script) and only 55 were correct. Assuming it is not simply that I put "the" in front of bands that the site did not have with a "the" and that sort of thing, I assume some trickery is involved with that script.

I used a fake name/email and tried again with a bunch of different answers (more what I thought before seeing that site) and scored a 64 or something like that. Sadly this was late at night and I do not remember what answers I used, but still they were off by ten.

So I begin again. I must know the correct answers!

I think instead of Kiss, the two girls kissing are probably Tatu.

I think the plant on the ground is most likely Robert Plant.

Maybe the stone/iron woman is actually Concrete Blonde rather than Iron Maiden?

I am also going back to my belief that the hammer is Tool.

I know those were among the answers I used when I got a better score.
