Question: Do any of the NYC MeChatters know a place in the city that sells pickled eggs by the jar? I've been craving them something fierce for over a week, and no place in my neighborhood has them, although they have pickled everything else.
No, and this won't help you this time, but someday you have to try this recipe to pickle your own. They're so delicious.

Kosher deli, perhaps?

None of the corner delis around here (west village) seem to have them. Maybe Russ & Daughters on Houston? Nope, not listed on the website.

*cries*

I will check the delis on 30th Ave in Astoria, jonmc.

Yeah, I just looked at Russ & Daughters' site. You might call'em, though. I don't think Guss's or the other pickle joint down there (Orchard?) does eggs, but they may well -- after all, they do whitefish in season and other non-vegetable pickles.

One of those big hoity-toity gourmet food purveyors might have special pickled eggs laid by rich-ass hens and pickled in molten gold, but they're not for us.

I bet you can get 'em at some super-ordinary deli in Queens, though. On preview, yep.

I bet my barber has a jar of them under the register.

Other places I've lived they use to just have 'em in the dairy case at the supermarket. Maybe Associated of Food Emporium will have 'em.

You could try asking in bars that serve them where they get them. Joe's on 6th ('twixt A & B) always has a big jar.

jonmc, I'm sure you've linked this place before - they might be worth calling...

but what do i know about buying food in new york? approximately fuck all.

that place is right up the street but they don't stock 'em. They do have irn bru & stilton, though.

stilton pickled in irn bru - yum yum!

Wholesale food distributors. I used to work for one, but that was in Indiana. If you need pickled pigs feet by the gallon, I can hook you up.

i bet Western Beef carries them.

Just order some, man.

jonmc, you are just gonna have to move down south if you insist on craving things like that.

Look, get a jar of pickles, eat the pickles, then boil an egg and put it in the pickle brine to soak. There you go.

Perhaps it should go without saying, but do peel the egg after boiling, first.

I cant wait that long. Lemme see if there's a western beef near me. I hate the fact that they name all their store brand products after the store. "Beef," is not a word I want to see on a soda can.

i bet Western Beef carries them.

Not for long.

No luck with the eggs. I hit 2 groceries, including Western Beef. Then I went to Papaya King and had two chili dogs. There was a mishap and now I have chili & mustard on my knee.

I visited a few of the delis on 30th Ave- none had Pickled Eggs. And I got a lot of weird looks asking for them, too. One of the stories had pickled everything but eggs. So weird.

seems to me I saw something about egg-pickling or pickled eggs on the Food Channel--either "Good Eats" (meaning a recipe, not sources, alas) or "The Secret Life Of..." which will give you sources.

My mom used to pickle eggs in a combo that included beet juice. Fave picnic fare...funny pink eggs.

And I can't believe any good deli doesn't carry them. Every single damn gas station here carries giant pickles in single-serving bags.

Pickled pickles we got, and giardenera, and pickled tomatoes, and pickled sausage, and pickled herring.

Eggs? No soap.
