I thought about sending stav an email, and probably will once I get home, but he might stop by here first.

There seems to be some consensus that teaching English in a foreign country is a Good Thing To Do At Your Age™.

My mom says there's a lot of Koreans in Korea.

No. Teach Korean to English elementary kids in the South.

(More information? What are your choices?)

Actually, Stavros has an essay on his site somewhere that goes to great lengths about all the ins and outs etc. Um...MeFi is down....can't remember the URL...'emptybottle' is it?

Don't go if it's just because "it's the thing to do at your age." Have you travelled much already?

Do you love kimchee (sp?)?

I'm not well-travelled and currently my options consist of South Korea, South Korea or continuing cubetrolldom. Stav's site is, in fact, emptybottle.org, peacay.

That Kimchi dude on MeFi was hilarious.

what about Japan?
posted by amberglow 28 November | 11:07
too many Japanese people.
posted by jonmc 28 November | 11:16
Japanese people are cool (and they're better to foreigners among them than Koreans, i hear--less discrimination)

I hear the cost of living is astronomical though. An interesting fact, most Japanese-born folks of Korean descent are still considered legal aliens.

There are some good (relevant) blog posts here from an American ex-pat who has been doing this for a couple of months now.

I can tell you from years of experience that teaching English in a Japanese junior high is awesome.
posted by Hugh Janus 28 November | 13:56
I agree with Hugh. If you like Korean culture, teach there. If you like Japanese culture, teach there.
(Also taught Japanese junior high kids.)
