26 November 2005

Linked from, and reminiscent of, our own eBay scammer thread, I give you Charlie Wenzel.
I spent several hours the other night reading through that thread. Those 4x4 folks really don't mess around.

Scammer offers to sell truck parts to another forum member. Scammer claims parts are brand new and asks 100 bucks plus shipping for them. Forum member sends check. Scammer later edits his post to say that he wanted $125 + shipping. When the buyer shows up on the forum to say "WTF, where are my parts?" The scammer points to edited posts and writes "you didn't send enough money." The buyer, admin and other forum members pop up to say "hey dipshit, you edited your post, he sent you the money you asked for now make with the parts!"

The scammer claims the first post asking $100 was a mistake and he really meant $125. The entire forum plays symphony on world's smallest violins and says "too bad, your mistake, he sent what you asked now give him what he paid for." Scammer gives orchestra the finger and says "well, since you're all being dicks maybe I'll just keep the money AND the parts."

Big mistake.

Forum members proceed to dig up personal information on the scammer, the scammer's parents, the scammer's friends and the scammer's workplace. Within a few posts they know where he lives, how he lives, who he works for and where he went to high school. Admin threatens to post the information publically if the scammer doesn't pay up. Scammer whines and thrashes. Says he'll send the parts but "not because you threatened to publish my personal info! No sirree! I'm just doing it to get it out of my hair."

Thread grows and spreads. Posts on other forums from the scammer start getting linked. The scammer steps into it even deeper when he admits that, oops! The parts weren't relly new after all. Truck nerds go apeshit!

So, seventy-odd pages of this later the scammer finally returns the money and is forced to post an official apology to the forum.

Truck nerds still find homosexuals even more contemptible than women, apparently.

Yeah. It's hard to slog through. Almost as bad as the time I accidentally wound up on a World of Warcraft forum.

I think the last video game I played was the orignal Sonic the Hedgehog. I've lived such a sheltered life.

At least it was a good game.
